One reason I quit driving, there are FAR too many idiots out there. :nono: And you have to be pretty darn careful walking too, people in cars think they have the right to turn right on red after maybe slowing down a little, & woe to anyone who gets in their way. Most of them are looking left to see if another vehicle's coming, and never even consider that there might be pedestrians in the crosswalk, or waiting their turn by the lights. :thumbsdn:
Until just recently, I was fortunate enough to work close enough to home that I could ride a bike to work. Getting to work wasn't a problem. Most of the ride was a long, gentle uphill, but on the way home, when I had gravity on my side, I would make much better time.
The downside of this was that I had to cross the entrance to a Fortune 500 company's headquarters, and even though there was a light at the mouth of their driveway, drivers coming out of the parking lot never seemed to consider that a pedestrian might be approaching the intersection on a bicycle (or even on foot for that matter). They routinely would either block the path of pedestrians on the sidewalk (hell, this is the Detroit area - I'm not taking a bicycle on the street at rush hour), or would pull up never even thinking to check the sidewalk.
I think the fact that the parking lot was about an eighth of a mile south of the road I was riding my bike along got people out of the mindset of exiting a parking lot.
Way too many close calls with drivers who were focused on anything but the road. Our office has moved, now, so the temptation to ride my bike is somewhat diminished.
