Reel to reel tape

I prefer new, but would consider used if stored properly. I am new to the R2R world and have heard of shedding but do not want to deal with that. I just purchased a NOS NIB Pioneer RT-707 along with 5 sealed Maxell tapes. Looking for more tapes to keep on hand. Any insight on what i should keep an eye out for is appreciated.

I get plenty of NOS Maxells right at THAT auction site. Sometimes it takes patience to get what you want but they are there.

If you want to try new run of tape, head over to US Recorders. They stock RMGI tape thats supposed to be as good as Maxell XLI. Havent tried the RMG tape myself but Im considering it. If you do, I have heard the LPR-35 is excellent tape. Im sort o up there in years and set in my ways I spose but I still prefer NOS Maxell XLI and TDK LN tape. This is all JMO though

There is pleanty of Scotch 206/207 on Ebay. I've paid as little as $3 and as much as $7 for new tape in sealed plastic boxes. I've never had any problems with it and my TEAC machines were biased for it at the factory.

Thanks to all who have responded with suggestions. I am looking fwd to getting my deck. I almost bought one in 1982 when the CD craze exploded - went that route. I have come full circle back to analogue. Bless my soul.

Since I am new to R2R - what are some of the 'items' (maintenance and otherwise) I need to have on hand for future use? Splicing block, leader tape, splicing tape, head cleaner, PR cleaner, demanetizer, etc.?

All the above, by head cleaner I am assuming you mean 91% alcohol q-tips and a lil elbow grease. Sometimes the best way to keep these beautiful machines running well is to use them, they seem to like that, lol. My machine gives me dirty looks if I haven't used it in a few days, waiting for the damn thing to start talking soon, then I know I am certifialble. Seriously, once you have them running good it just takes mostly common sense to keep it running good.

Check out US Recorders and get the CL-100 Headcleaner and RC-5 Pinch Roller Cleaning fluids and a good demagnetiser at the very least. You can get the other assecories as you have the need for them. In 35 years of using a R2R, I still dont have a splicing block!!

I watched Ebay for months for a Robins Gigson Girl splicer to replace the one I had in the '70s. I finally got an unused one for three times what it cost back then. It's worth it!

Most old stock tape goes for what you could get brand new for. The new has the advantage of newer oxide technology (greater headroom, for example). Old stock varies quite a bit with how it has been stored over the years.

For new, the RMGI LPR-35 is downright good tape for vintage commercial R2Rs. You can get it here: http://www.usrecordingmedia.com/index.html

Enjoy,
Rich P

I would stay away from that, I bought 5 7" reels of Quantegy Tape and it had a bad case of sticky shed. I tossed them all.

I've been buying Ampeg 641 tape and have had no problems with it. There are 2 sellers selling it on plastic reels, I bought 5 of the 10" reels. The reels have a warp from leaning but other then that they sound great, nothing on the rollers or heads.
I plan on buying some 2400FT on a 7" rolls next since I have storage for 30 7" rolls.

Scotch 207 is way better then the 641 on my machine, maxell's are highly rated as are BASF tapes. You just have to be patient if you want great buys.
