Hi all,

So I bought an old Rega Apollo (1st gen - the wide bodied ones) knowing it had a disc read issue. Sure enough, CDs would start to play, then would stop 20 seconds or so into the disc.

Trying the most logical easy solutions, I cleaned the lens. Nope. I then opened it up, and cleaned and regreased the mechanism.

Not good - when I put the player back together, it was then dead. The display was fully lit, though if the read head was in the right spot, it would say Apollo on the display.

So I ordered a new drive, and a new ribbon cable. Still no luck.

Any ideas what to do next, or do I trash it and sell the remote online?

Further note - plugged it in, and it had the full lit display. Moved the head roughly to the middle, powered it off and on, and got the Rega Apollo display.

Opening the lid generates a door open signal, closing it displays initialize, though nothing appears to be moving (no spindle spin on head movement). Then I get No Disc.
 
Thought I'd bump this - talked to a local shop who said repair would typically be $250-300. However, since I had touched it, he said he couldn't guarantee me any price, and I would need to "blank cheque" it for him to look at it.

So cracked it again, and it looks like I was plugging the six wire harness into the wrong spot on the board. Seems to be running fine other than a constant "no disc" on all my discs.

A friend's Apollo wouldn't work without pressing down on the lid, until it warmed up for several hours.

For what that's worth..
 
Hello,
I had a Rega cd player from which i only used the transport to connect it to my Curcio dac.
After some years it stopped working but soundwise it was nice so i went for a dedicated transport from Rega.
After a few way that one also stopped so bought some software to rip my CD collection and got myself an Aurender.
Nowadays things with moving parts are not made to last. They can be made to last for sure but even with a bigger budget it is hard.
