Regional Foods You Miss

Bogframe

Super Member
I've written about the Canadian foods that The Lovely Blanche misses, but there are some foods I've come across in my travels that I miss and can't find here in New York. They include:
  1. Top split hot dog buns (New England Style)
  2. Canned boiled green peanuts
  3. Big Red
  4. Jordan's Red Hots
  5. Circus Time Potato Chips
  6. Moxie
  7. B&M Brown Bread (bread in a can)
  8. Crown Pilot Crackers
Do you have any out of area foods you miss?

Moxie rocks! If I hit the lotto the first trip would be to the Porsche dealer, the next trip would be to VT with a large vehicle to fill with Moxie. I like boiled peanuts too, always get some on the way to the beach in SC. My favorite food I can't get here is Poutine.

White Castle.

While it's an international company, they don't have any presence within 200 miles of here. I miss 7-11 Slurpees.

Anything Cajun or creole.. so much flavor and different than anything you'll find anywhere else..

Do you have Chattanooga's contribution to Haute Cuisine, Krystal ? Pretty much the same thing...

Nope. As a displaced St. Louisan, I miss my WC.

If there was one good thing about Katrina, it's that we absorbed a lot of NO refugees...good Cajun food isn't hard to find here.

Sure don't find any around here that's any good.. :(

I miss the belly bombers at two in the morning too.. I buy the frozen ones at the store, but it's just not the same thing..

Chicago style hot dogs and Italian Beef. Friday night Milwaukee Fish Fries, not so much for the food, which is easily copied, but for the sheer force and magnitude of them.

Fish Tacos from Rubio's, and Carne Asada Burritos from Roberto's - both in San Diego.

I have 4 White Castles within reasonable distance from me :D. I always get 5 Jalapeno burgers with a small order of onion chips. I love em so much, the old lady wont let me come near her for a couple days. Not from the gas either, but because she says I smell just like their onions, that it seeps through my pores or something :lmao:

Chicago Italian Beef and Gondola's from Avanti's in Peoria, IL. Whenever I go up to IL for a visit I have to have those two things at least once. Sometimes more than once!

Martin in Austin, TX

I've lived in various states over the years and here are some of the things I miss from various areas:

- Southern BBQ (TX, NC, TN, Kansas City)
- Steamed Crabs (MD)
- Italian Beef (Chicago, IL)
- Pho (San Jose, CA)
- In 'N' Out (West Coast)

All except In 'N' Out, I can find here in the NYC/NJ area but all of it pales in comparison.

Poke made from fresh caught island fish. Actually everything made from fresh fish or anything else from Hawaii.
Ululani's Shave Ice, made from homemade syrups, macadamia nut ice-cream and an ice cap. Maui.
Guri-Guri, strawberry and pineapple sherbet from Tasaka's on Maui.
Malasadas, a Portuguese donut from Leonard's on Oahu.
Shrimp from Giovanni's Shrimp Truck on Oahu.
Cream puffs and donuts on a stick from Komoda's on Maui.
Chitlins from the South.
6 different kinds of fresh picked raw oysters from Narragansett, RI.
Anything from the Union Oyster House in Boston.
Okonomiyaki, sort of a crepe local to Hiroshima, Japan.
Real ramen, delivered to you on a bike/moped or in a stall outside a train station anywhere in Japan.
Okinawan Soba.
Slow smoked BBQ, Dallas.
White Castle, there used to be one out in El Cajon near San Diego.
Fresh dug up clams/geoducks/cockles from the Puget Sound.
Anything from Schat's Bakery in Bishop, CA.
Fresh California abalone/periwinkles/mussels. I just have to get off my ass and go get some.

Oh man... I'm hungry now.

Going to Baltimore's Inner Harbor, and eating......CRABS!!!

You can get crabs in New Mexico also, just be careful who you date?

Liver Mush

You can fry it for breakfast or just slice cold and add mayo to make a delicious sandwich :)

Generally unique to western North Carolina.

I miss brochen for eating bratwurst with... Wonder why I've never been able to find it in the states?

trhee, try Virgil's at 152 W 44th. Genuine hardwood smoked Memphis-style BBQ, as good as anything I've had down south. I can think of two places in Bensonhurst that have really good Pho.

Went home to New Orleans recently for two weeks. Got me some
Blue Crabs
Crab Stew
Crawfish
Oyster Po-boy
Shrimp Po-boy
Hot Sausage on French
Red Beans and Rice w/ Pork Chops
Gumbo
Shrimp and sausage jambalaya
brought back a 25lb watermelon

ate a whole a bunch of other stuff

Catfish - Reelfoot Lake in Tennessee style. A whole table of fixins.

Just not the same anywhere else I have been.
