Replacing My Receiver and Speakers

Better hope that Grandpa's speakers are compatible with an 8-ohm impedance rating. That receiver doesn't seem to be capable of lower-impedance loads.

16 gauge copper wire will be fine (and less expensive than 12-gauge) at any likely home-audio length. If you had more power or low-impedance speakers, heavier wire could be beneficial.

The speakers worked with the TX-38. Someone earlier in the thread mentioned that the TX-38 and TX-8020 are similar in terms of power. Should I go back to my old speakers? They were JBL G300s rated at 8 ohms.

You definitely need to clean those relays. I have a sweet little Onkyo receiver serving porch duty. Sometimes, left channel cuts out, and I have to rapidly turn the "a" speaker selector on and off quickly, which is essentially shooting current thru it I think. I should get off my ass and clean it, but so far it tends to level out.

Don't sweat the ohm thing, I don't believe you will have a problem there. I had a TX-38 back in the day on 4 ohm Cerwin Vegas. Never once shut off.

Thank you to everyone who gave me advice in this thread! I just won/ordered an Onkyo TX-8020 second hand from an auction website. Hopefully it will come within the next two weeks. I will try to buy some speaker wire in the meantime.

14 or 16 g wire is just fine, there is zero need for anything heavier.

I picked up this spool of speaker wire at Best Buy yesterday. I don't plan on opening it up until my receiver comes in (which has not shipped yet to my knowledge).
