After battling for the past few years through progressive joint pain brought on by an early racing career, we let our dear Bailey go late yesterday. Even though we knew she was in a lot of pain, she chugged through it with hardly a complaint and maintained her usual cheeriness and gentle demeanor. Bailey was a racing Greyhound for the first four years of her life before retiring to our home and living a life of leisure. The last couple of years had been particularly difficult for her and even her medication that helped so well early on, just wasn’t enough to numb the pain anymore. It’s hard to watch as you doggie of ten years goes from frolicking like a pup one day, to not being able to lay down without difficulty, yelp or a groan and a sigh for the last two or three. The last year had been much more of the later for her with a lot of stumbling, potty accidents and the inability to navigate the steps to her bed upstairs where she desperately wanted to be at night. I carried he up most nights when she tried but just couldn’t make it. The last two months, she just gave up didn’t even try anymore. For a dog that always needed to sleep for the night in my wife’s and my bedroom, this was heartbreaking to see.
I’m not sure how long you keep a dog with you when it’s clear that there is so much pain even with medication. It was hard as hell but I think at some point you cross the line from providing them the best and longest life you can to the inability to let them go for selfish reasons.
Many of you have had the pleasure of meeting Bailey over here at one of my get-togethers or just hanging out. She was my best buddy and never left my side while listening to music or cruising AK. I sit here this morning doing the same but it’s crazy hard to look down and not have her beside me.
Bailey the Audio Dog – May 1998 – June 2011.
Unconditional friend, constant companion and much loved family member. We were blessed to have her in our lives for over 9 years.
Rest in peace my good friend. I miss you terribly already.
