Restoration/Upgrade Of Scribby31's Sansui AU-9500

Both are the same, fta comes on tape, fbu is bulk (loose in a bag). Avoid the tape as the glue on it corrodes the legs after a year or so.

Thanks for your reply ZOOM,

Yes I found out about different packing, - the glue issue was new to me, thanks for notifying.

But what about the different hFE number on them - 300 hFE vs 430 hFE ?

The listed hFE values are the minimum of the range, 300-600 for "F" ranking and 430-600 for "FB" ranking. In my experience, the "F" ranked transistors I have received are often ~400 and this is what I used for the AU-9500 restoration.

Thank you Leestereo for your amazing restoration threads!
This thread helped me to resurrect my AU9500 which was given up by a technichan.

I have now recaped the 9500 except for the 4 main capacitors.
Any recommendation for good quality/sounding main PSU capacitors ? Size - 4700uf / 6800uF / 10000uf ?

Thanks in advance,

Lee,
I have used BERYL capacitors 4700uF in my amp. These are chinese made however they were approved by the tech for their performance and specs... i have had no issues over the last 6-8 months after recapping and am happy with my 9500. Id just like to know if upgrading to japanese caps ,or the UK caps will make a noticeable difference or not ? i can get the BHC caps or the nichicons for that matter ,if they make a difference and you suggest ...

I have no experience with BERYL capacitors, so I cannot comment on their quality. I do think it is worthwhile to increase the capacitance of the main capacitors from the stock value of 4700µF, since this is a relatively low value for the power rating of the AU-9500.

Ok....will the bass improve in neatness and tighten up with a step up capacitance value from better brands like 6800 uF or 10k

Hi Leestereo,

I doing my AU-9500 so i would like to see the pictures but i cant seee them, it says please update your account to unable 3rd party hosting in place of the pictures, is it possible for you to send me the pictures, that would be very helpfull.

Just install the Photobucket Hotlink Fix browser extension for your browser - I am using the 'Chrome' browser - with the extension enabled and I can see all the pictures.

Have you seen how costly it is to upgrade a Photobucket account? - thus - unlikely to happen. :)

hi everyone and sorry to bring up this old post.
I have an au9500 and am preparing parts to do a full restoration .

Reading here and there I understood that it would be a good thing to change also the bridge rectifiers working on the 4 big capacitors
Reason is that they are prone to fail.
Do you have any experience with this?
Which part should I buy to replace them? (Usually sourcing from mouser)

Other question
Leestereo mentions ksa1845 as transistor replacement but I do find only ksc1845
Are they the same or interchangeable ?

Thanks a lot !
