Revox B795 Cartridge Replace

Anyone have experience changing cartridge on a Revox B795? Is mounting kit essential? Anyone know where I might get one? Have seen some posts saying that it's not as hard as some say. Any first-hand experience / advice appreciated!

MrStylus in Germany sells the kits. I just sent one to Florida but I do not have any more of them.

Thanks John! I got an "insecure site" warning when going to mrstylus.com. Have you ordered from them safely? Obviously a little nervous about putting cc info on an insecure site.

I just checked and got the warning too. I will let Chriss the owner know. I have ordered thousands of dollars worth of needles from MrStylus. I was the first to sell the nude Swiss ellipticals in North America. Black Diamond brand. I now get the EVG brand here in the States. I would not use the website until it is secure. I will let Chriss know now.

I have seen the same thing happen with other vendor websites. I did send Chriss an email. It should be resolved soon. You are correct to wait. I would not risk a credit card or debit card transaction either on an unsecured website. MrStyus and Chriss are above board in all respects.
 
What's important in replacing a cartridge is two things:
a. Making sure the cart sits at the proper height
b. Making sure that the counter balance is adequate and not heavier than that.

There are two different counter weights (pieces of metal actually) in the kit and a few fittings of spacers and screws. If you are mechanically inclined and have such bits and pieces around (perhaps screws and spacers from other headshells and turntables) you may be able to fit a new cartridge using stuff laying around. I know I did and I replaced a lightweight cartridge with a heavy Ortofon MC one. I used a piece of led that I had and cut of a piece suitable for using as a counterweight.
There are some adjustments that need to be made for height and tracking force and all are described in the service manual that can be downloaded from hifiengine

Thanks SaSi, Also some soldering to be done it looks like. I'll try to get my hands on that service manual.
 
No, no soldering at all! Where did you get that idea? I have the original Revox mounting kit, and agree, that while it is VERY nice to have, (and they are hard to get) it is not totally necessary. In fact, I bought the homemade mounting kit that JMTA sold years ago (they were/are? a Revox authorized dealer). It came with spacers and weights and a cheesy VTF balance, and a few other bits, but not a copy of the coveted stylus gauge, so that will have to be measured manually. I have a good copy of the instructions for cart installation and some other pics of the correct mounting position, I can probably dig up.

Sasi and I sent a couple of PMs back and forth years ago setting up our B791s and 5s. A good electronic VTF gauge makes setting it correctly much easier.

The important PITA is knowing how the weight of your cart compares to the known ones listed to know what weight, lead or brass, to use AND taking in to account if a stylus brush will be used, since the VTF has to be adjusted up 0.5g if it is down. I have two B791s I use all the time and literally my only complaint is the insanity required to change carts and even just setting the VTF. Luckily I have a well loved V15V with a JICO SAS on one and the original Tracer with a Jico HE on the other, both with brushes, and really enjoy them both on those tables.

Thanks John. Glad to hear I was wrong about soldering (I had read something about having to solder the leads). I am waiting on new cartridge, so I haven't removed the old one and looked around yet. Looks like it's going to be a challenge getting at those downward-facing mounting screw heads. It is an awesome turntable (My father was original owner. Also have his SONY STR-6200F receiver). Thanks for the tips! **Any instructions or pix you could dig up would be GREATLY appreciated!

I just got an email from Chriss. The MrStylus website is fixed.
 
I've done it, and HIGHLY recommend a cart with easily replaceable stylus (like Shure, f.i.) or 'P' mount conversion as cart swapping is a major royal pain in the keester in these Linatrack gantry carriers. Definitely not 1/2" MCs or Grado!
