Roberts Reel-to Reel

Hey all,

I am in a bit of a quandry regarding an old Roberts R2R I have had for a few years. I didn't do anything with it for a long time because I couldn't figure out how to get power. Turn out I had to pull the volume knob. DUH! Anyway, I'm usually a B/W TV guy, but I thought I'd ask for help here on this thing. The reels are held onto the spindles by a black rubber thing that looks kinda like a suction cup. I have one but the other one is missing. I am trying to locate one somewhere but as yet have been unsucessful. Right now, I am using a clothespin to hold the unwind tape to the spindle.

As I am not looking at the machine right now, I can't recall the model number, but it is the one that is VERY heavy, and had dubbing features from reel to 8-track (Still works!)

Similar to the Akai X-1800SD.

You can make a reel retainer using a piece of cork about the size of a half dollar. Clothespins can fly off when you fast wind.

Rubber stoppers work better. You can make your own. Like these

those look like hamster or rabbit water bottle stoppers to me. I bet a feed or pet store would sell those for next to nothing.

I just got a Robert’s 455 today that needs a belt that I have ordered and needs a new pinch roller. Not sure where to get one. The unit is still in the garage as it is very heavy and I can’t lift it.
