Rolling receivers/Onkyo TX-8++ vs 9++ series

My world is 2ch. Even TV which is Hafler Hookup for rears. So, I rolled 3 receivers in and out of my main system which is tube separates because I picked up an Onkyo TX-80 as part of a bundle to get a Sony CD recorder. In the bedroom system it beat my class A amp, way sweeter. I have read where it is one of the sweetest Onkyo ever. So I rolled the receivers in my main system. Vector research was nice but kind of compressed sound stage, old Realistic ( fantastic FM tuner) was nice, Onkyo TX-80 was audiophile clean big sound stage. So as a backup and at some point I will be very downsizing, does anyone having any thoughts on the bigger 8++ or the next gen which is the 9++ series?
