Have a G-7700 that needs to be recovered. Hunted the 'net for rosewood vinyl and came up with zip. Anyone know where to get this?

I saw it Somewhere

I really did ,I was looking for something else.I will have a go at it again.

Why shoot for vinyl? Why not go for real rosewood veneer? It will lay down much better and look much better. Vinyl was used for cost reduction in production quantities. I suggest the difference in price for a single unit, and the amount of effort you will put into re-veneering (regardless of type used), the savings, if you find vinyl at all, will prove insufficient to settle for fake.

Just my 2 cents...

Good point, Rich. However, this one's a tad short of being a keeper. Re-capped the power/driver board (it was fun getting the Sansui glue off) and it sounds pretty good. No stereo FM at all. The light doesn't come on and there's clearly no stereo FM sound. Sheesh. I'm not very excited about spending $120 +/- on an alignment for a $150 receiver.

I have a high intensity lamp (read: really hot) on my wrk bnch and while I was recapping, I nudged the end of the AM antenna under the lamp and melted about 1/2" off the end of it. Hmm, what's that burning smell? Kinda ruined the whole evening.

Reveneer the cab, and part her out. I'm sure somebody would gobble up a real rosewood veneered cab. Also, there must be other stuff in there that would be enough to recoup your investment to date.

I'm with Rich.
I'm not sure what benefits vinyl offers, besides being able to toss it on and bend around corners, but it has one real downside; it's pretty much impossible to repair.

Get it scratched and you're sunk. Plastic polish kind works, but real wood can be redone almost indistinguishably.

I'd use wood for anything I was planning on keeping in the house. Out on the patio, in the garage, out in the shop, who cares. Heck, sand it smooth and spray it black.

vinyl

It is at partsexpress, but it is cherrywood, I have a roll, cost about $14, and if applied with care looks like the original stuff..still not as nice as real veneer but it depends on what you want for the money.
casey

Yep, it looks like the cherry stuff at PE is as close as it's going to get. Out of stock 'til September, though. Rob (merrylander) sez that he isn't aware of any rosewood vinyl.

Thanks for the replies.

Not having my mind on, ummm, male recreational interests, I hadn't really noticed the similarities to certain centrally located body parts. Must be getting senile.

I guess :lmao:

The way that pic sets, it doesn't take much imagination

Ha!

With little to lose, I recapped the tuner board (17 of the little buggers) and replaced a cap on the digital power supply board where the vinyl sleeve was slipping off.

Plugged it in, tuned in an fm station, adjusted the stereo lamp pot (VR02) and WOO HOO! - stereo lamp comes on and I've got real FM stereo! So, for about $5 of caps, it works. Sounds pretty good, too. :smoke:

FM muting isn't working correctly so I gotta see what the deal is with that but a least I've got a little progress. :D

Ok, I bot the veneer in the above pic, sent the "cabinet" and veneer to Rob and here's the initial results - Rob sent this pic to me today.

Pretty good, huh. :banana2:

I see Rob is up to his old tricks............thumbs up mate :thmbsp:

The next time someone wants one of these 'saw-slit' vent style cabinets veneered I will build them a whole new cabinet with an aluminium vent in any color they want. Making those slits in the veneer is a bitch. An alternative would be to make a new top, veneer ths whole thing, then cut new slots on the saw and rout out the backside.
