RS 4.5 Info Advice Needed

Listened to Ricke Lee Jones and sounded great. I love the RSIIBs but man the RS 4.5s are in another world. Seperation and the Bass no comparison.
Have not been able to give it any V yet but even at a couple of watts it is awesome. Then listened to Cherlyl Crow even at low V bass is there.
Big difference between the RSIIBs andthe RS 4.5s is the bass also the soundstage is wider in the RS 4.5s.

I am using the RSIIB bass equalizer with the RS 4.5s and I am Horz Bi Amping toworrow going to try it Vert BiAmp. Well what do I want to listent to now???

I have to echo that!! It was a long night unpacking these babies and moving these monsters into place. John did a great job ensuring they got to the USA in great shape. He must have stock holdings with 3M for all the tape that was used LOL. Jerry and I couldn't wait for the glory moment of firing these babes up, but the (his) wife wasn't so enthusiastic. Finally just before midnight music tickled our ears as never before, at low vol. of course. Clean, crisp and seamless. We both looked at each other and said WOOOOOW! Saturday, time to crank it as his wife is working. Jerry is just getting done cutting up and stacking the packaging materials in the garage. We listen to Santana's "The Essential" CD I bought over, disc 1 with Jingo and Evil Ways, Black Magic Woman. Talk about clean, crisp and accurate. OOPS his wife is home....time to turn it down to idle.

wow!!! they sound that much better then the 2b's??. i knew they both would sound good if not really close in sound but it sounds like the 4.5's sound alot better for you. good to hear that for you, now you have two excellent sounding speakers. tom t

Also 4.5 owners can you compare your passive crossover with mine. As I thought this is the early version it does not match the schematic for Rev B that is on the Classic site. So if you who own these could compare yours with the pic here and let me know if you have the same one or if you have the later one I would really appreciate it.

Not sure what schematic you are using off the Infinity Classics site; the one I have seen shows all the revisions up through Rev. H, with the component changes shown as numbers inside circles. Anyway, my earlier set seems to match yours pretty well, my later set has more caps and a slightly different layout.

I went through my files and dug up an engineering copy of the 4.5 crossovers. I'll have to post it as 2 scans because it won't all fit on my scanner.

The schematic itself looks similar to what is posted on Infinity Classics. On the right (second) scan, you'll see the list of revisions. Beside each lettered revision are numbers identifying what specifically was changed in that revision. Those numbers correspond to the numbers inside circles on the schematic. Hope that helps some.

Thanks so much the schematic I had did not have the revisions listed this is what I was looking for.

Now since you own both can you hear the difference between the two?
If so what are the differences and which do you like better. I have to decide if I want to bring it up to latest revision

I traced out the schematic from my board and I have a non reved board.

So all the revisions listed have not been applied to my board.

The numbers after the Rev corespond to schematic

Rev A Tweeter tweak. This one easily (1, 2)
Rev F Tweeter Added 1 Ohm resister in series to circuit Protection or tone down? (7)

Mid Range circuit Originaly shown in BiAmp mode

      .05mh            400uf      2 ohm pot

Rev B Mid Range swap from .05mh to .1mh easy if this was all more later (3)
Rev C Mid Range swap 100uf to 150uf easy if this was all more later (4)
Rev D Mid Range swap from .1mh to .15mh still trying (5)
Rev E Mid Range swap from .15mh to .2mh maybee this fixed it (6)
LETS GET THIS MID RANGE DONE ONCE AND FOR ALL
Rev G
Ok .2mh back down to .15mh (8)
Add 3.83uf (9)
Add 4.5mh (10)
Swap from 300uf to 150uf (11)

While were at it lets change the low crossover too

Swap 12.5mh to 12.5mh / 8mh center tap (12)
Swap 300uf to 150uf (13)
Add 75uf (14)
Swap 3 pull Single Throw to 3 pull Double Throw

Well Mid Range Still not right
Rev H swap 4.5mh to 2mh

Ok who can tell me what type of mod was made in Rev G to the Mid Range
circuit by adding the cap and coil and changing the existing cap and coil values.

Also in the Low circuit what does the 75uf added do to the circuit

I am trying to understand the changes made to learn a little bit about these circuits.

Well You know how you said the RSIs sounded a little bit more than the RSIIs
about the same thing. Its is the subtle things. The voices and the soundstage just all of it a little more.

Glad the schematic was some help. What is interesting is to look at the dates on the revisions and see how many mods they made in a very short time frame.

I've never compared my sets side by side so can't really tell you what, if any, differences the various crossover mods made. I suspect that they are subtle enough that my untrained ears couldn't discern a difference. But both sets are nice!

I am wondering if anyone knows how many RS4.5 RS 4.5 were made? I read somewhere 300 pair but that seems too low.

Yes approximately 300 is correct. That was the pre-determined target production amount. They were really made as a statement, a mascot if you will, for the company back then. They were not mass produced. Significant audio stores received one display, whilst the larger ones had two or three in stock. They cost a fortune at back then prices and also during the late seventies-early eighties disposable cash for recreation was not as handy as it is nowadays. Most of what were eventually sold were ordered. There also were numerous 'one offs' produced as special orders.

Wow, great score. Catching up on the posts here, I did not realize that those were yours in that Goat post. I am really glad for you and for the 1B's too. We need BIG Vintage pairs to end up in good homes.

What are you powering them with? Where did you buy your pillow, Ha, Ha?

vito, the pillow is gone,sorry! i have a b&k 202+ for the top end and a soundcraftsmen 5002 for the bottom. they work real well with the speakers and seem to have no problem driving them to high levels at all. after an hout the soundcraftsmen amp heat sinks are slighty warm but the b&k's are pretty hot. the mid/high panel is a tougher load between the two panels. the bass panel is just loafing along. thats 675 watts total into 4 ohms!!.
