RSL speakers, am I alone?

Howard, it is totally awesome that you are keeping this support going. As my first "hands on" audio project I picked up two of your speakers from a garage sale this morning and I'm going to be refoaming the 8" subs. Do you have any information on these guys, they feel like oak cabinets? Thanks

I'm thinking they're the RSL Magnificent's according to a post earlier on page 2

Thanks for the kind words! They are indeed RSL Magnificents. Refoaming is a bit tricky and I recommend you have it professionally done as it is easy to damage the woofer. If you'd like more info on the speakers, visit our website and click on support. Then select vintage speaker support and you can download the brochure "RSL Speaker Line Brochure 1989."

Howard

Thank You, for the info, on the tweeters, now I can get the correct parts to repair them, as for the others, I will try a few different woofers and mids,

for the 8" I do have one good original I can compare any new one to, so now it is down to finding a good mid range,

and again Thank you

they do have closed backs,
I do appreciate the construction of these speakers, from the hand wiring, to the quality of the cabinets, and the selection of the woofers and tweeters,

I might look into having the mid ranges repaired, I heard of someone locally that deals in vintage speakers, Dave Miller out of Tulsa, Okla

That's probably a good idea. Please let me know how it turns out.

Wow, I'm really impressed. You've really done so great searching. I took a quick look at the links and both those drivers look really good. We actually used to purchase speakers from Pyle and I think we may have even used their midranges (similar to what you found) in some of our speakers way back when. And, the price is right too. Please let me know how it sounds. This could be a great resource if other customers come to us with similar needs.

Thanks,
Howard

will do, I have been trying to find what seemed like the closest match, within a decent price range, the GRS's from Parts Express sound decent, a bit on the high side, meaning they carry more mid range, but they do have good bass, I really think they will great in my Advent bookshelf's

Howard you are the man. I may be picking these up soon, I heard they sound wonderful from online chatter. Thanks again!

RSL Crossover Problem!

A friend of mine gave me some stereo gear when he passed away. I got his RSL 512s in walnut, and the 3600s in black.

While moving the speakers around to get them home, I noticed that both of the 3600s had something rattling around inside the cabinet. :tears: (I was not able to detect the same issue with the 512 due to SIZE!)

I opened up the 3600s and found that BOTH of the coils on BOTH of the crossovers had come loose! They were glued to the back COVERS for the L-pads! On one speaker, a wire was actually broken on one of the coils...there was no sound from the woofer on that speaker.

See photos for repairs. Anybody else run into this, and if so, how did you fix it? The only thing that I can see I would change would be to put the zip-ties closer to the ends of the coils to prevent wobble.

Since the 512 is from the same era, I wonder if I need to open those up and check for this. :scratch2: I know the L-pads on the 512 need cleaning, but removing the grill (as mentioned previously) is going to be a PITA.

Mystery RSL

I picked these mystery RSL towers up from CL Free ads as I just couldn't resist.
There is no identifcation as to model but I can say they are stout at 46" tall, 11" wide and 10" deep.
Ported in the back at the bottom they sport a nice 8" cloth-edged woofer and what looks to be a Philips/European dome tweeter. They are obviously styled after the Vandersteen look.
Soundwise they remind me a bit of the Dahlquist DQ-8, quite nice.
Any clues:scratch2:

Hi,
You have a pair of RSL Alpha I speakers. They sold for $89.95 each in the mid to late 70's. Sorry, I don't have an old brochure I can copy.
Best regards,
Howard

I have a pair of the original studio monitors with the horn tweeter.

The low end seems a little distorted or muffled. I'm guessing the paper surrounds have stiffened. What can I do to fix this?

Thanks

Eric

Thanks for the ID.
Was I correct about the tweeter being Philips?
They are a good sounding 8" 2-way:yes:

Hi Eric,

I haven't really heard of that happening. I guess it's possible. I'm wondering if the distortion is caused by voice coil rubbing. In either case, I think that possibly re-coning the woofers may be your only solution as replacement woofers are no longer available. Every once in awhile I see some used woofers on eBay.

Howard

Hey Eric, I have those same speakers, very early monitors (12" 3-way) with the horn. Recently removed woofer to repair loosened terminal plate and found this:

caps were soldered and floating in space, coils hot glued to cabs - but, as you see hook up wire was 18 ga if that and toasted looking. Maybe you are not getting full power to that woofer as intended, I rewired mine w/ 16 and changed the posts.

I really like mine and found a pair of Magnificents for way cheap (8" 2-way) - looking for some 3600's or 3300's too!
