Running MC452 as monoblocs

You still have full range going to both amplifier channels, this is what I have a problem, you don't gain any more headroom, you might as well run one amplifier....it achieves nothing..
All that is useful about this, is to sell more amplifiers......
If you are going to run out of headroom with one amp, you will run out of headroom with two doing this ridiculous (in my experience), passive bi-amping..

Now we're on the same track. I was fantasizing about that in the last few weeks. Even lurked on the Audioclassics speaker section. Yep they've got 'em both for sale. *sigh*
 
But then you would only have 2 channels of amplifier, 2 x MC452 gives you 4 which you need for active bi-amping...

275 bridged parallel mono @ 180 WPC for the highs...

This setup will also give true channel separation that mono blocks are known for. Plus the nice combo of tubes with lots of SS power.

Yup. McIntosh's reply expounds upon the bottom line in post #11. To paraphrase the reply; "It's not 900 watts, but here are a few reasons we think it may sound better."

The question is are two 450 watt amps bi wired as good as two 450 watt amps running mono. If the crossover were in the 450 hz region then half the power would be sent to the HF and half to the LF. So if the amps are putting out 60 volts what is the benefit. If wired in parallel none as the voltage stays the same. If bridged then the voltage increases to 84 volts. Definitely a gain. So what happens if you are bi amped with electronic crossovers and you have 60 volts going to each group of speakers. So you have 60 volts going equally getting equal out put levels. Do you add 60 and 60 and get 120 volts,1800watts, or do you add 450 and 450 and get 900 watt levels, or do you only get 450 watt levels as the highs and bass never totally add together perfectly. Or do you get something less. Some folks who think bi-amping is the perfect solution believe the voltages add perfectly giving you the effect of 1800 watts. I think that result is a little extreme. I realize passive crossovers absorb a lot of power from the most efficient drivers to match the least efficient and that coils have a lot of internal resistance that can effect the output of the woofers and other drivers. So you might be able to get the effect of having 1200 watts but the balance might be shifted a bit. Personally I see no advantage to bi-wiring as long as the passive crossovers are in place. And more power isn't always the answer. At some point all speaker systems become non linear in displacement and distortion increases. Seeing as JBL , Altec, EV, Community Light and Sound, Meyer and Renkus Hines are the only ones that publish linearity and distortion curves and all admit that compression starts setting in some where between 6 and 10 db below the RMS rating out put of the speaker, I can't imagine seeing 900 watts being any benefit to Mac XR100 speakers. JBL is using the same magnet technology Mac, developed for the XR290 as is Renkus Heinz and EV, so performance has increased. But they are reflected in the published specs, and adding more power just increases distortion of the speaker which is many times higher than the electronics.
