Rush to tour this summer!

Permanent Waves

Digital Man
Geddy Lee confirms summer tour and new album!

Rush nuts like me have heard the rumors of both for awhile, but I'd say it's now official as the man himself has said it. :thmbsp:

http://www.rushisaband.com/display.php?id=2113

Rush's 2 year-ish plan (although anything could change) is thus this:

Play (test) a few new songs Rush has written (they have about 6 already written supposedly) on a brief (45 date-ish) N. America tour this summer/fall.

Then Rush will jump into the studio after the tour in the winter/spring and tweak/record this material plus others (written on tour and/or in studio at this time).

THEN Rush will release said album (perhaps just digitally) and embark on a (probably) world tour (70-ish dates) in support of it during the summer/fall next year.

So Rush and Rush fans will be busy the next 2 years starting this summer! :thmbsp:

I love this band; they are in their late 50's and are going to do a writing/touring schedule like they did in their 20's and 30's (although not as "rushed" haha: they will have more time off in between the tour(s) and studio and in between dates on the tour).

PS: Go see them! Whether you have or haven't! :D And especially if you haven't in years/decades: If anything Rush has improved live with time imo (Ged's voice is the only thing that may not be better than the old days, but it's usually still good to very good...and sometimes even better: compare A Show of Hands and Different Stages to Rush in Rio or R30 for instance; on the former he sounds somewhat strained/sick, on the latter comfortable and "flowing"). Granted I've only seen live them since '94 (when I was first old enough to see them), but judging by their live albums/dvd's (and many boots), Rush has become even better players live in the 2000's than ever. They sound looser, more powerful, more raw, less "stick to the album format exactly", more confident, have a lot more fun on stage, etc. I've seen them 8 times since the mid 90's and every single show since their Vapor Trails tour (2002) has been better than any I saw in the mid 90's with their 30th anniversary tour being the best Rush show I've ever seen (although the Vapor Trails and Snakes and Arrows shows were very close!).

Hehe, I can tell! :thmbsp:

No problem, and I give credit to the great Rush blog that I linked to above. (Although I've seen the same news echoed on other Rush sites).

I think we Rush fans are in for a good couple of years! Start saving now...my gf and I are going to try seeing them a couple times on each new tour if possible (work: I swear I'll quit if I can't get off to see Rush a few times! lol), because although they've been playing imo very very well live recently, they are not exactly young and have been mentioning the tolls touring has been taking on them in recent years. IOW: Go see them while you still can because any tour could be their last!

PS: Welcome to AK, always good to have another Rush nut here! :thmbsp:

August 5, USANA Amphitheatre, SLC, UT. And a new album! This is far better than anything I could have asked of them! Can't wait for a couple of the new songs to leak out. Knowing Rush, that probably won't happen though. Did I mention that I'll be going for front row? Yep, $270 bucks for the SnA tour a couple years ago. The one I missed...:tears:

I know...a new album? :scratch2: It was looking like we'd have a few random songs released in between tours not long ago. I'm still skeptical though, with the way Neil and Alex have been talking of albums not selling. I'll believe it when I have it! :D

I'm actually almost certain new songs will leak out. I heard Vapor Trails weeks before it hit the shelves (I couldn't take it at that point! lol 5 years since Test for Echo! I was starving for new Rush material! :D), and I actually had to make an effort not to hear SnA before I had it in a better SQ format (not the lossless rips being shared). And even then I did hear Far Cry (I figured I could at least hear the single) long before it was released. I think Rush even put snippets of many songs from SnA on their website before the release! It was so hard to stay away from all the ways to hear the album or parts of the album!

$270? Is that it? Seriously I saw at least $300 for R30 and SnA...and I think that was not even front row. And I figure that $300 a couple of years ago would be at least $350 now. :sigh: It's just ridiculous and I refuse to pay anywhere near that on principle alone.

Hundreds of dollars for tickets... it's just so crazy. I stopped going to concerts many moons ago but broke down in 2001 and spent about $100.00 to go see Yes. I had seen them in the 70's and 80's and I was really impressed with them in 2001. I am a huge Rush fan that hasn't seen the band since January 13, 1986 in Dallas, TX. I paid $15.95 for that ticket. I saw them April 10, 1981 in Dallas and paid $10.00 for that ticket. I saw them February 2, 1980 in Fort Worth, Tx and paid $8.00 for that ticket. The first time I saw them was at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, TX at a show called "A Farewell To A Texas Summer". It was the "last weekend" of the last summer of the 70's, August 26, 1979. I paid $12.50 for the ticket and saw Rush, Foghat, Little River band, Billy Thorpe and Pat Travers. Maybe I will break down and pay the money... I just might... I miss those guys!

Even ticket broker prices have gone nuts. I saw Rush from the 3rd row for $370 about 6 years ago. The next tour they wanted something like a G for similar tickets. It's a shame all the good tickets go to the brokers who get them from corporations that buy out the seats in advance.

That said, I love Rush. I am a lifelong fan since the 70's. I will definitely see this tour. I am bringing my son to this one.

Well, we do have to remember inflation, but yes, even I am old enough (and have been since my mid 20's really) to think that something else is going on besides just inflation: the dollar just isn't "worth" what it was even 5 or 10 years ago, or even 2!

So that puts me in an odd position where I can actually rationalize spending more on many things...for hell, what's $20 or $50, or $100 or even a few hundred these days? Not much!

But then, precisely because these amounts are not so much anymore in purchasing power, I should hold onto the cash as it means my total net worth is also not as substantial and every little bit counts...right? :scratch2:

It's always a balance for me about whether to spend or save (as it is with about everyone besides some types who are perhaps wiser or more disciplined than I and just don't indulge in luxuries, which they define as virtually anything they don't need). Do I spend some money for the little things that increase my overall enjoyment of life (eating out, going to see a movie/ballgame, spending the gas for a weekend getaway, buying yet another used cd, seeing a concert, buying electronics, etc.), or do I sock away even the somewhat trivial amounts I would spend on such things until they add up to sum that is large enough to be worth transferring from checking to savings where it will then be added to a not so trivial sum that via interest (should) continually increase exponentially overtime enough to at least keep up with inflation (as it has so far), adding up to a significant amount, some of which I can then buy more investments (of all types) with, which (haha) should increase over time as well (if they don't collapse!), or I can at least transfer to something safer like cd's? (assuming the banks don't fold and run off with them and/or any amount in accounts that is not FDIC insured, which has happened to many people, one of whom I even know).

My personal solution is to not be so strict with money as to worry about it too much and deny myself little luxuries (like $7-$9 for a micro brew instead of a $5 standard six pack ), but not to just blow any amount casually on things I really don't need. Thus I come up with self imposed limits on what I will spend on any given thing, and right now it is no more than $100 on a single ticket (with some flex there, but let's say no more than $120 absolutely). I just can't justify anymore than that, it just isn't worth it to me no matter how much money I have in total and how little $100 is these days.

Anyway, I'm jealous you got to see Rush "back in the day" but I'd say you should definitely do yourself a favor and get even "bad" general admission seats for about...I forget...$25 to $35? hopefully not more than $50 anyway!...and see them this summer! :thmbsp: I think you'll find it "worth" it and have a great time.

Wow...3rd row for close to $400! And over about a grand for the same later?! Are you sure? Wow, the most I've seen is I think $500. But then it wasn't like I was looking for those type of tickets so I didn't search everywhere.

That is so cool you will bring you're son; you should know (if you don't already) that Rush thinks that is like the coolest thing, that they are really flattered that older fans are both still coming to see them and that they even think that their music and show are good enough to be something their older fans want to share with their kids. :thmbsp:

I've seen a lot of parents with kids at recent concerts (like their 30th anniversary and Snakes and Arrows tours), so you won't at all be the only one doing this. It is neat to see.

Little update:

Rush.com (http://www.rush.com/) is displaying a count down clock which is counting down to Thursday, April 8th, 7 a.m. (EST I think).

Hopefully this will be the time when we get some official news regarding the tour (like dates perhaps) and new material (album). :thmbsp:

I'll try to wait patiently...:D

Maybe they'll put out a new live album. I'm surprised Peart is still playing with everything he's been through. They can certainly do without the inane video clips onstage.

I can certainly see a live album/dvd of this tour and/or next summer's tour (assuming that they do also tour next summer).

It is rather amazing Neil decided to get back to making music after his losses. For I'm assuming he didn't have to (monetarily wise) and he told Geddy and Alex at his daughter's funeral to consider him retired. And then his wife died shortly after.

Supposedly, the drum god didn't touch his drums for a long period (months/years? not sure) after his daughter died, and he'd played them about daily since he was a kid up to this point. Alex remarked that he didn't play his guitar much for a period too since "music is a celebration of life and there wasn't much to celebrate then". (I'm paraphrasing here from a quote I read years ago). He and Geddy were in group mourning with Neil and no members of Rush were making any future plans for the group in the late '90's. (And both Alex and Geddy have stated that without Neil there is no Rush--quite right--so there was no option of a replacement for Neil or some sort of form of "Rush" without him).

But "time will do it's healing" and "you've got to let it go" as Neil once wrote (in the lyrics to Open Secrets), and Neil eventually pulled out of his grief, especially after he met his future wife Carrie Nuttall whom he married in 2000. They now have a daughter together (born last August). :thmbsp:

He then tentatively contacted Geddy and Alex in early 2001 about the possibility of making new music again and a year later that passionate mess that is Vapor Trails was released (on which much of the lyrical content deals with Neil's loses and grief...universalized of course).

And since then Rush has put out two studio albums (one cover collection and the phenomenal Snakes and Arrows) and gone on 3 major tours of which they've put out live albums/dvd's of each. And now we can anticipate yet another tour (or two) and new material. :thmbsp:

I'm glad, for one, they chose to continue on. (Especially considering that "Test for Echo" would not have been a very good swan song imo, nor the live concert album of the Test for Echo tour, "Different Stages").

Btw, I like the video interludes in their shows, some of which are just downright hilarious. Rush is having fun and showing their comical side as of late in their live shows and these brief introductory videos also give them longer (and much needed) breaks in their live shows.

Rush tour dates announced

The new tour dates have been posted at www.rush.com

I"M FREAKING EXCITED!!!!

Moving Pictures in its entirety! WOW...for the first time ever

Playing locally at the white river amphitheater August 7....I'm there baby, I'm there

HOLY CRAP! It's for real! :nutz:

Got 'em August 5 in my area. There's a chance that work could get in the way and ruin seeing Rush for me.

BTW, that artwork on the tour announcement page looks suspiciously like an album cover. Maybe there's some hints here? :D

I'd like to see them again, but they are up against Yes/Peter Frampton/Scorpions (at side stages, free GM easily available) at Milwaukee Summerfest.

I"M FREAKING EXCITED!!!!

Moving Pictures in its entirety! WOW...for the first time ever

Thanks for posting the info, I didn't get a chance earlier. :thmbsp:

MP in it's entirety means...The Camera Eye!!! One of my favorite Rush songs ever, and not played in it's entirety (as far as I can tell) since the Signals warm up tour! That's pretty special considering I'm pretty sure Geddy said he didn't care how much fans wanted some songs played live, he wasn't going to (because he didn't like them anymore--yes Rush is embarrassed by some of their back catalog, mostly material from the 70's--or didn't think they came off live very well). The Camera Eye was one of the songs listed in the question that led to this response. It was a couple of years back if I remember correctly.

And I was excited to hear Witch Hunt played twice on the SnA tour! (both legs) :lmao:

What's odd is that this year, being Permanent Waves 30th anniversary, they aren't going to play it in it's entirety, especially because I'm pretty sure Alex mentioned the possibility not long ago. I'd love to hear Jacob's Ladder live myself, that and Different Strings being the only two songs I haven't heard live from PW. Perhaps Rush figured they didn't translate live as well as The Camera Eye did, which is the only song they haven't played live from MP in a long time. Or perhaps, since The Camera Eye is always at the top of the list of songs Rush fans want to hear live again, they just caved.

Not that I'm complaining, far from it, MP is better, imo, than PW, and I've never heard The Camera Eye (of course) and I missed Vital Signs on the Vapor Trails tour (the alternated it with Freewill, and the date I saw them it was Freewill :sigh:). So I'll take those 2 songs from MP over the 2 I've never heard live from PW. With any luck they'll also play Jacob's Ladder!

Let's see...tour dates...St. Louis of course...Kansas City, Chicago, Wichita, Omaha, Columbus, Tulsa...possibly some of those too...ok all of them and more!!! lol :D

Great news! This is going to be a(nother) Rush tour to remember!!!

I'm not too thrilled about the tour name however, it makes them sound like yet another ancient 70's band who haven't put out any new material (at least any worthwhile) in decades, nor have toured in years. Oh well, us Rush fans know better and I suppose they had to call it something!

Oh yea, as soon as I heard rumors of a Rush tour months ago I knew there was a good chance we'd see one this summer/fall.

I hope work doesn't get in the way for you!

I'm pretty sure that will just be the art work for the tour (if that, it could just be promotional art work). Rush comes up with cool artwork for everything, and this of course resembles a time machine (or some sort of machine anyway) so it goes with the tour title/theme. I'm also pretty sure that Rush don't usually come up with any album art work for an album until they are about done with it. Then they send the theme/lyrics to Hugh Syme and he (usually), along with Rush's input, comes up with something awesome. :thmbsp:

Speaking of album, here's a press release regarding the tour that mentions that:

"The band is currently working on their 20th studio album with producer Nick Raskulinecz..."

http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/rush-time-machine-north-american-tour-2010-featuring-for-the-first-time-ever-moving-pictures-in-its-entirety-90202157.html

Not quite sure how accurate that is though...

Oh yea, and btw, the first Rush documentary, "Rush: Beyond The Lighted Stage", will premiere at the end of April as the article mentions. Should be an interesting watch on dvd when released.

I'd like to see them again, but they are up against Yes/Peter Frampton/Scorpions (at side stages, free GM easily available) at Milwaukee Summerfest.

So...what's the issue? :D

Just a little notice:

The official press release for the tour I linked to above (http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/rush-time-machine-north-american-tour-2010-featuring-for-the-first-time-ever-moving-pictures-in-its-entirety-90202157.html) only lists 37 dates (at my quick count, and it is the same as the list on Rush.com) with the disclaimer at the end of the list that: "Additional cities and dates to be announced. Itinerary subject to change."

So if you don't see a date close to you right now don't despair quite yet as there is still a (good) chance that more dates will be added later. This coheres with Alex's statement that there would be "about" 45 dates on this summer tour (I wouldn't say the 37 dates as of now is "about" 45, more like 40 and over is).

Time will tell of course, but keep checking for the complete and finalized list! :thmbsp:

(I'd personally like to see a couple of dates added closer to me, like Des Moines, Iowa or Memphis, Tennesee).
