SA-9500II Stepped Volume Control Question

I have a Pioneer SA-9500II. I noticed that when I gently turn the volume all the way down to "infinity" before shutting the amp off, the knob can go one more half step beyond its "home" position and then rebounds back to its normal infinity stop. The knob and hex screw is secure. I find this odd because my SA-8500II which is essentially the same volume control does not do this. Otherwise its smooth and each stop and click works perfectly. Nothing is forced...….However not sure about how the previous owner cared for the amp. Could it be normal for certain models or production runs?

Possibly the result of minor variations in the manufacturing process. I have an SA-9900 that uses a step attenuator type volume control and it also goes a half step past the lowest volume position except in my case, it will stay there and doesn't jump back.

The step positions are a spring loaded ball bearing going in and out of holes. Literally.

Besides manufacturing variations, also include life wear variations, grease aging and contamination to your list...

After reading this thread, I had to turn around and look at both my SA8500II and SA9500II and mine are just the opposite. My 8500 does the extra half click while my 9500 does not.

Either way, I have owned both of these for over 30 years and are still going strong. I have never thought about this. Still not a concern.

My vote is for manufacturer variation also.

Thank you....All the explanations sound good to me.....I'm glad I asked the Pioneer community!! I guess the mass produced Alps potentiometers may not have had all the holes and ball bearings aligned to perfection. I'm happy with all the feedback...I consider it normal....thanks!
