SACD 2 channel, SACD 5.1, DVD-Audio, CD

Ever put in a CD, SACD, DVD-Audio & struggle to figure out is it 2 channel, 5.1 channel? Or worse what player to put it in; MCD201, MVP861, or MCD1000? Or how about what surround mode should I select on the processor, CD, SACD, External, DTS? Many are multi-compatible, but which mode yields the best sound?

I decided to help standardize the Industry today. I used a Brother label maker to mark every one of my SACD, DVD-Audio discs to indicate what player, mode & whether or not you need to navigate a video menu to play them.

Either I have too many players, too many discs, or too much time. But, now when I pick out an SACD or DVD-Audio no more hit & miss. I immediately know how & where to play it!

Thought I would share my revelation.

And still to come: BluRay and HD-DVD!!!!!

Are some SACD only to channel ?

SACD's can be 2 channel or 5.1 multi-channel. I have even seen the discs marked incorrectly.

Multi-channel SACD's are also known as Hybrids.

Ivan,

passing with the mvp-861 through the mx-135 (external), on sacd hybrid, I see the five channels plus Lfe led on the mvp-861 illuminated. On my mx-135 I see all the yellow channel led's illuminated but I never get a signal passing through the subs, the five other channels, no problem.Using DVD or DVD-A the subs are working.is this because the SACD is only five channel and does the mvp-861 gives automaticly on multi channel sacd the leds including Lfe or is there something wrong???? :scratch2:

Nothing is wrong, most hybrid SACD's don't have an LFE channel. Wonderful standardization don't you think!

Thanks for the info Ivan, now I'm shure everything's ok!!!It's indeed a wonderful standard they use.

Let me get this straight
I just purchased a Mobile Fidelity SACD of JimHall "CONCIERTO" . On my player it reads SACD but only two channels .
There is nothing wrong with the CD?

Wanting to listen to DVD-A in 2 channel through my new C2200, I was confounded by not being able to do anything without a monitor connection (the monitor going throught the MX134, which is off in 2 channel mode.) So I connected the composite video out on the MVP861 to an extra input on the TV and now I'm good.

It is indeed confounding figuring the best setting. I usually set all my multi-channel recordings to the EXTERNAL input on the 134 and that works fine. I often have problems getting the digital signal to work from a DVD-A, including the DTS setting.

Ivan, do you prefer the analog out to the EXTERNAL ins for DVD-A or the digital outs to the 5.1 in or DTS out if it is available?

Looks like the SACD you refer to is 2 channel only. Nothing wrong, unless you were expecting multi-channel.

As confusing as your question may sound, I understand it. Analog out to External ins for DVD-A is my choice.

Sometimes not until it's in your player! :music:

Most of the Mobile Fidelity SACDs are 2 channel. If they are numbered "UDSACD 2001" or higher they are from the hybrid 2 channel SACD/CDs. Also on the back usually on the right side it says stereo on it. The multichannel Mobile Fidelity SACDs are numbered "UDSACD 4001" or higher and are all classical titles except a new series called the Discovery Series which are numbered "UDSACD 7001" or higher. Here is a link to the multichannel Discovery Series:

Yes I love Mobile Fidelity CDs, I have most of them and I only play the CD part of the CDs (no SACD player yet) and they all sound great.
