SAE A501 on the 'Bay

I've been looking for one the last couple of months but have no idea what this usually goes for. What do you guys think of the price? Overpriced, fair, or a steal?

I like the SAE amps, and I would think that price is on the upper end of what I have seen. I have two SAE 2400L amps which I use to bi-amp a pair of Infinity QLS-2's although they are only 200 watts per channel I think they are probably better amps overall then the 01 series and I only paid 300 apiece for them. Inside they all look pretty similar in their layouts and their build quality. But I kind of like the sound of my Phase Linear amps better than my SAE amps and for that price if you watch closely you can get a Phase Linear 700 which is considerably more powerful of an amp. Those SAE's are also a pain to work on as I am working on a few right now, other than the power transistors they are great as they mount in a socket which you don't even have to solder them in. But those speaker relays from what I have seen are hard to cross reference to get replacements for. Over all the SAE's look nice in a black rack and with all those LED's flashing are pretty cool, but not as nice as the 2500 and 2600 with those amber meters, I gotta get some of those someday.

Did you notice he'd done a complete rebuild on the unit? I've seen his items before, and he seems to do a thorough job on updating them. I'd say, for a cosmetically nice unit that had been completely gone through, that was a very good price.

I agree and if I was a betting man this unit at this price will sell (not to me though). :D

I guess if you are looking for a SAE amp and want one thats been gone thru and he knows what he is doing, but one thing I don't always prefer one that someone has gone thru as sometimes I find items that have been worked on are not always trouble free. Case in point is an amp that I recently got where a tech very capable had just repaired it and it lasted 15 minutes for me, had to ship it back and have it repaired again fortunately the guy warantees his work (not sure on a auction purchase if that would be the case). Where as every piece of equipment that I have purchased working from auctions and other online purchases I have not had a problem with, other than the ones I bought which were for repair as is. I would rather have my two SAE 2400L amps for which I have right at 600 dollars in for the pair than one SAE A501. I find it best not to rush into anything but wait until great deals come around. My wife says I find to many good deals as my house is full of what she calles good deals and wants to know if I will ever run out of good deals to buy.

I was just wondering if I might ask, how are you able to post so many items in your signature, when I tried to post all my items it says I am limited to four lines.

I created the signature in Microsoft Word and published it as a PDF. I them opened the PDF with Photoshop and cropped the extra saved the remainder as a JPEG. :D

SOLD! Told you......

Yeah. Sadly, the days when you could pick up something like an A501 or 2400 for $300-400 on eBay are long gone. Over the last couple of years, there has been a steady upward trend on SAE amp prices. There's an A501 on there right now with a BIN of $950. He won't get it, but it won't go for $300 either. The only way to get a deal on one is to find one locally at a garage sale or something, which tends to be tough unless you live in So Cal.
