After a lot of research and the back and forth of where I wanted to start I finally pulled the trigger and bought some cheap vintage gear to tear into and get some experience(I learn best by doing rather than reading). Also, a lot of info is opinion based and since I don't have the capability of trying out a marantz or pioneer I figured I would start cheap and work my way up. I bought two receivers from an electronics recycler...a Samsung ss 3350 and an Onkyo TX - 6000. I also bought three pairs of speakers...Utah A-130, Fisher xp65s, and Allied 3040. The receivers were only tested for power so I went ahead and plugged in the utahs to test the channels. The Onkyo seems to be working fine on both channels and all of the inputs. It does have some sticking buttons and the volume is a little scratchy. I believe it will just need some contact cleaner and vacuumed. The Samsung on the other hand is only working on the right channel. The pots need cleaned really bad as well. My plan for the speakers as of now is to use the cabinets because they have a great look and seem very solid. I haven't decided on what to replace the speakers with yet so I was hoping for some input on that. I have attached a couple inside pics of the Samsung since I can't find much info on it. I'm hoping to begin troubleshooting it this weekend and make a new foot and knob (machinist by trade). I listen to Sinatra, Zeppelin, Phil Collins, fleet foxes, etc...If anyone can point me in the right direction in trouble shooting the Samsung I would greatly appreciate it.

If you are lucky, a deep cleaning of pots and switches will bring back the other channel. Looks like conventional receiver, so standard trouble shooting techniques should get you to right place. Check fuses- see if you have signal on tape outs, pre outs if there, then need to start signal tracing.
My only caveat is I believe (but don't quote me) that these use ksc945 and ksa733 (no KS on the part itself) which have their base in the center, not the collector, and can drive you crazy if you aren't aware of the possibility.

Thank you for the input...I am definitely a newbie but I guess we all have to start somewhere. I am looking forward to hearing the sound of the Samsung...I've heard it was a MOTL unit that can produce a nice warm sound. The onkyo sounds ok...I've only tried it on my Utah speakers but I can't seem to get it adjusted to produce the sound I'm looking for. The highs are either piercing or flat.
I cleaned the pots and vacuumed the Samsung out and everything works great now. Actually has a really nice sound to it and is much more enjoyable than the onkyo. I'm wondering now if I should leave it be or go ahead and replace the caps while I have it open? Also, I plan on buying an SPL meter to test the speakers. I have done a little bit of research but is this the preferred route to go? I have tried finding the factory information on the speakers but I can't seem to find any anything.
