Sansui 5000a CL find

sake

Active Member
I picked up a 5000a on CL yesterday for $20. Got home and read about the dreaded 1040 driver boards :tears:. I then opened it up to see what I had. YES...:thmbsp: a pair of 6013 boards staring at me. I listened to FM through headphones and it sounded ok, but not great. Both channels worked but it wasn't real clean.

I deoxited the controls then checked DC and got sick, 8 volts on the right & 4 on the left channel. This thead http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8829&highlight=sansui+5000a talks about the high value caps being to blame for high DC. Would replacing the 2200uf & 1000uf caps be a good place to start to get the DC to a decent level? I don't have an SM or scope, or the knowledge to use one if i did, but I can solder a bit.

Thanks,

sake

I think the 5000A is cap coupled. You cant check DC without a load resistor across the speaker terminals. Hook up some test speakers and test it again.

Thanks Rob.

If I hook the speakers up to A for example, would I check the readings at those terminals?

Well, I measured at the terminals with speakers and I'm now getting 0-5mv. So adding the speakers sure changed my outlook on this unit. Thanks.

I was able to get a service manual for a 5000x. How different are these two units? Also, should the output level screw on the back be fully clockwise?

I hope thats the case Eddie.

Any idea if the 5000a uses the same bulbs as the 2000a? Only one is out, behind the loudness button, but most seem a bit dim. A few years back I was able to get them from Radio Shack for my 2000a.

As I recall, yes, they are the same dandy ones you can pick up at RS. I got one in a 2000a I need to tend to myself.

That was on Chicago CL, correct? I saw that last night and am happy somebody here got it. I have a 5000x and like it almost as much as my 9090db. It sounds fantastic. Congrats! Chicago CL is great.

Yes John, that's the one. I had to drive from the O'Hare area around 3pm out to Cary, IL to get it before someone else who was coming to look at it that night. It belonged to a man who recently passed and his son was selling it. Real nice guy. I told him it was in good hands and that I would put it to good use.

Depends upon the production year. I have an early release 5000X which is similiar to the A but not exact. Buddy has the later release which is quite different including the bulbs. Voltage measurements should be the same. Use the manual as a guide, check components first before buying for replacements.
Also, should the output level screw on the back be fully clockwise?
That's a volume limiter. I turned mine all the way up as I don't have anyone to mess with my equipment. If you have kids or buddies that like to crank at full volume you might want to set it lower just in case to protect your speakers.

The 5000 series are very nice sounding with all the bells and whistles to boot. The sevice manual is lacking info though. I'm currently working on a 771 that was given to me. Looked like crap but cleaned up nicely other than the wood cover is in bad shape. Idle and bias settings will be checked and adjusted before I hook it up to speakers. Sansui put out a great service manual on this unit.

Hey Eagle1,

I also have a 771. I attempted to measure the bias on it, but couldn't get a reading. I measured across the -+ @ F01 after removing the fuse like it states on page six of the SM. Any tips?

The 5000A is excellent! That is if it has the right driver boards as described. I recently found a very clean 5000A. When I got it home I immediately opened her up to clean the contacts and check the driver boards. I was very happy to see the 6013 boards in mine also! I have played it several times recently and I am amazed at the power and the dynamics of the amp. I too think it sounds as good as my 8080DB. It just doesn't have quite as much pazazz cosmetically. I like the more compact size and the obvious quality of workmanship Sansui was famous for.

Here are some pics of when I had her opened up and a shot of those 6013 driver bords that you want to see if you ever score one of these babies! good Luck with yours! Franksta

I just got done listening to the 5000a some more out in the garage on a pair or AS-300's. One thing I noticed when I first listened to it yesterday though headphones was that it sounded a little distorted at certain frequencies. It got alot better after I turned down the Output Level screw on the back. Seems alot cleaner. It was after I did that, I seemed to notice that Sansui sound.

I think I'll bring it in tomorrow and hook it up to my BA A150's

Yes Franksta, I was very happy to see the 6013's. I was kinda kicking myself at first and thought I got something thats gonna need alota work. I was relieved. The cosmetics don't bother me, when I close my eyes I just see the music.

Those are the same speakers I ran my 5000x on last....what a great combo. I may have to dig it out of the 'on deck' circle of receivers to give it another go, now that I'm thinking about it. It really was one of my favorite receivers. I liked it better than a few that get more press, actually (Pioneer SX-1280...).

Have you cleaned the level pot yet?

After listening for a bit now, I think this may be one of the best combos I have. The 5000a really seems to fit the A150's. I'll try it later on some AR 2ax, but I can't imagine it sounding any better.
