Sansui 5000a smoking what next?

So to confirm previous posts, the 5000a which the infamous f board will overheat and catch fire. I got a call from my son who came home from school stating "Dad your your Sansui is smoking with a red light on it, I switched it off and unplugged it". This radio was one of the few pleasures in my life.

I have not opened it up yet. My question is this. Is there any hope for her? If it didn't completely melt can there be any affordable silver lining? What should I do next?

I know I know.

Please think about this kind of stuff you want to bring into your home. Maybe buy something without known fire issues? Something much newer and safer, or if it is old gear fully serviced and connected to a switch socket/ timer, things like that.
 
I'm glad your son got home when he did, and that he didn't get hurt while unplugging the receiver. Today is a good day, that's for sure.

I was going to be my smart ass self and say grab a drink, it's old enough to smoke.
Maybe just have a drink, and have family movie night.

You need to tell your amp to kick the habit.....although smoking is VERY common in Japan.....

How do you feel about opening it up and posting a photo of the insides? Smoking can mean its pretty easy to ID the most likely affected components (as you can usually see "the Bern".

Im pretty sure this amp uses "fuse resistors" in circuit - which may fail simply because they are old, or because they did their job, and failed to protect other components in circuit. We Sansui boffins usually replace all of these in a standard amp refurb, as they become unreliable.
Like I say, getting some visual confirmation will help pinpoint what to look at more closely.
 
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Just remember that yours is the one that counts.

There are a number of threads here on AK about repairing or refurbing the Sansui 5000/5000A/5000X. If you read some of them you might get enough education on this subject to make an informed decision. Then you need to open it up and asses the damage.

After that you can think about how important your 5000A is to you and how much effort you are willing to commit to getting it back.

The 5000A predates fuse resistors. It could be a lot of things. It doesn't take much to make a lot of smoke so don't asume the whole thing is toast. Whatever you do don't throw it out. Worst case you will need to replace a board or two. It can probably be fixed and can continue to be a small joy in your life.

I do have the F-1040 boards. I do see any fire damage at all just a slight smell of ozone...
