sansui 661 and 771..are they good?

well i was supposed to do atrade for the sansui 1000 and 4000 models but won't work, however there is a possible trade for the sansui 771 and 661...how are these units? how do they compare to the other 2 models? i know the 4000 is a solid unit and killer tuner..are the 661 and 771 the same? any issues? thanks

I am not sure what the answer to your question is but I am considering a Sansui 881, so I am anxious to see the replies too!
 
I have a 771 and I sure like it. Great sound all the way around. I have a 2000x too and even though there is only a 1 watt per channel difference between the two (2000x=39 wpc, 771=40 wpc) the 771 blows the 2000x away in my opinion. It also has the option of 3 sets of speakers. My 771 didn't lead an easy life, ( I got it out of the back of a P/U truck heading off to the junkyard) and with a little cleanup on the pots it sounds absolutely great. I really don't know anything about the 661 though but if it's anything like my 771 I'm sure it's pretty robust, just a little less power. ;)
 
The xx1 series are underrated gems. I've been using an 8010, the black faced version of the 771 in the kitchen for months. It's wonderful and has an awesome tuner. Styling is a little dated but you can sometimes get them very cheap.

Despite the barely perceptible hum that's been there since the day I bought it new, my 881 is a fine receiver!
 
cool..thanks guys. I don't know what i'm gonna do, starting to have a few too many receivers again..hahah i still didn;t pick up these receivers, but if i do, i'll have 4 in the house! hahah i just can't get away from this vintage audio. I will maybe keep them for my daughters when they grow up.
I can't wait to hear them when i pick them up.

thanks...would any of you know how they stack up the bigger 4000 model lets say? is the 4000 just more of wattage rating? or is there a sonic difference? i might be able to buy a 4000 series...thanks

The 4000 isn't bigger.

In the under 50 watt class, there is basically no audible difference until you're comparing a 50 to a 15 watt amp.

I'm not a great fan of the xx1 series. They do tend to hum, and the cost cutting is obvious compared to the Single Digit Series.

I would only look at 661 and above.

That said, they are solid receivers, and usually sell cheap.

To the OP, any of the ones you were looking at are decent. 1000, 2000, 4000, 5000 are all nice receivers. Very old school but sound great. 661 771 also nice, just later generations, with less heft, but newer amp designs. You can't go wrong with most any Sansui.


oh to only have 4 receivers.....

I've got a 661 I picked up really cheap. The previous owner had replaced a fuse with a screw. When I discovered that, after having already used it, I was quick to replace it with the proper rating fuse. I don't have a clue why they replaced the fuse with a screw, maybe it was blowing fuses for them, but for me it's working perfectly.

The tuner is good, but it doesn't like being placed under a laptop. It'll work (the tuner) but it's very susceptible to IR interference from the laptop, moreso than my Yamaha receiver in the same situation.

Soundwise, it's amazing for only 20 odd WPC.

I don't know how it compares to the 1000 and 4000 models.
 
I recently picked up a 771 and paired it with ADS L780 speakers, sounds pretty good. It is powerful, warm and quite detailed. If you have a shot at a 771, buy it, you will not regret it.:banana:

Another bonus to the 2000x over the 771 is the 2000x has preouts to run another amp off it where as the 771 doesnt have that option. My 771 is in the livingrom pushing a set of rectilinears and epicures while my 2000x coupled with a kenwood amp powers my klipschs in the bedroom. So for me I lean on the 2000x
 
The 771 is gold! But you may want to find a way to keep it along with your 4000. Sansui never really sold many 661's. They sold tons of 771's and 881's. You'll know why when you hear one.
 
I'm doing a restoration on a 661 at the moment for a friend who collects the xx1 series. After I have done the 661 he wants me to restore his 771 and 881.

Having heard the 881 I can assure you it's a very sweet sounding receiver. It's got that Sansui warmth and has plenty of punch.
 
Got Sansui 661. Fully recapped & replaced pre-amp transistors. It has magical sound! Surprisingly loud and detailed. Specs says it's 2*27W, I doubt it!

It's in my 'keep it 'till the end' list.
