Sansui 7070 Transformer issues?

Hello all.

I picked up a 7070 and the local thrift show for $30. It powers on, but all the lights flicker and I cannot get any sound. Power meters don't budge a millimeter. In one instance the flickering stopped, but still no sound. Lights appeared to be somewhat dim to my eye.

I am hearing some clicking as if going in and out of protect mode. I removed the cover, and can hear a sizzling noise (crap!) that matches the flickering. Hard to tell if it is the transformer or the two main capacitors but definitely coming from one of the two.

The good news, I think, is that I don't see any bulging or leaking capacitors. No scorch marks or odors. Unit is is in very good shape on the outside and surprising clean on the inside. Light dust near the vent where you would expect.

Will be taking to a shop, but am I right in suspecting that the transformer may be gone? Could this just be the main capacitors? Anyone else run into this issue with the x0x0 line?

most likely the power switch ..quite common on these old things .

I am not sure whether it could the relais. I had pops and other on my Sansui 771 and changing the relais was the thing to do. Also on my Pioneer SX-650. Its a far fetched though without having more insights.

As Pete says, it is probably the power switch, might also have some relay problems as well, but what you see there is quite typical for equipment of its age.

Beware that if you do take it to a shop, the cynic in me thinks there are some who couldn't be bothered to take the time to fix it properly and will even tell you the transformer has failed when it hasn't. If it has, this is usually terminal for one of these as there are very unlikely to be modern replacements available, (unless made specially) and used transformers are in extremely short supply.

Good luck with it, don't do anything drastic (like throwing it away ) until you have told us here what the shop said.

The power switch is pretty easy to bypass, so the shop could do that to see if it's the power switch causing the issue.
