Sansui AU 4400 Problems, help/advise needed

Yes could well be, although l like to have the iron fairly hot and use for minimum period, ie 2-3 seconds. I use mine at between 350 and 400 degrees C. Yes could work out very well for you, not everyday you can get a complete parts unit for postage cost :thumbsup:

I want to give a shout-out to members: Oldsansui441, HepcatWilly and jami w !!! Let me explain: I made a general appeal for some direction in fixing my Sansui AU 4400. Lo-and-behold, from The-Land-Down-Under, came uncommonly good, patient and generous help from member Oldsansui441. HepcatWilly who was following along chimed in with the offer of an identical donor amp to assist in my repair. This was a no charge gift if I'd cover the shipping costs. WOW !!! He mailed the amp at his expense without an apparent care about reimbursement. HepcatWilly was able to be so generous because of the generosity of member jami w who all but gave the unit to him. So here I am the recipient of all this collective generosity. Amazing !!! I choose to believe that this is not the exception but more the rule amongst folk of common interest who have been, many times themselves, on the receiving end of this uncommon/common grace. A working amp is now a possibility and I will keep you all posted. Many Thanks

Old sansui441, jami w and HepcatWilly: time for an update. With the donated AU 4400 (kind regards to HepcatWilly and jami w and the generous help of Oldsansui441),ORIGINAL outputs and needed TR's were salvaged and installed and the idled Sansui sings again !!! The amazing dobro of Jerry Douglass delights my ears as I type. Bob Dylan, ZZ Topp, Led Zeppelin and CCR have never sounded better !!! I must confess though that once I'd done all I felt comfortable doing, and not wanting to risk trashing the amp, I enlisted the paid help of a local technician. I am confident it would not sound as good were it not for the donated original 2SC1444's .I have begun troubleshooting the power board of the donated unit and want to continue learning. I have identified 3 bad TR's and 3 bad resistors and putting together a parts list. Distinguishing good from bad resistors is proving difficult for my limited skills and I suspect the related caps affect my meter readings. As it is, nearly every res on both channels (on the lower 1/2 of the board) read open after a flash that is gone before I can read it. The few that do read seem out of tolerance. Are the caps drawing my Meter? NOS 2SC1445"s I bought on e-bay and was afraid to be counterfeit are thought to be genuine by the technician who helped me and I plan using them on the donated unit. That is great news dedmonson, bet it is nice having her up and running again. Are you sure your meter is reading those resistors accurately as it shouldn't be reading that many as open. Often if a resistor reads a value other than spec you will have to desolder one leg to take it out of circuit and recheck, this won't apply to an open reading though. Could there possibly be a build up on the resistors legs causing limited meter lead connection? Maybe try measuring from the solder side.

Sounds like you might end up with two working units at this rate :thumbsup:.
 
Thanks HepcatWilly and Oldsansui441 for the encouragement !!! I have paired the amp with 4 Dayton Audio AIR speakers and it really is amazing. I originally had a pair of lower mid-level Infinity's when I bought the amp in the early 80's. But the new technology in these entry-level Daytons exceeds my expectations. After reading several open resistors I did switch to the solder side expecting better results but, it was the same. Like yourself, I have some problem accepting so many open resistors as fact. Later today, I think I'll gently clean the solder side of the board with some contact cleaner and take some more readings. I have checked and re-checked my meter and have no reason to doubt it but I'll try a different meter also. I don't have an analog meter to try though I wouldn't think it would make a difference. Still, by-the-way, having fun !!!

Yes the Dayton's seem to get very good reviews. Are you running just one pair at a time? Are they 6 ohm speakers?

Will be interesting to see what you find, yes maybe try another digital meter if you have one. Glad to hear you are still having fun :thumbsup:.
 
Daytons are 6 ohm. Have run short trials with A/B but A is in the bay area of garage, B is in a 8x20 second story workshop and I'll select the area I'm working in. Have bought a non-matching, era correct tuner on e-bay and waiting for it. In the meantime, I'm using, for now, an abandoned A/V CD player to the aux input. It seems a little hot but general opinion is that its ok. Music on my phone to tape input sounds great. Reviews complain about the shrillness of the Dayton's tweeter but with my upper register hearing loss they're a good match. Yesterday, my cheap hardware store meter was handy and I started re-checking resistors. It was a random check and I wasn't checking values, just continuity. No opens. After a battery change in my Fluke all seems well. Over the next couple days I'll step through values. Thanks to all for your continued help, interest and encouragement, It is much appreciated.
 
I suspect faulty output transistors I bought new ones from eBay for this and all sorted I replaced drivers also and 2sa726
