I've been through Rockford numerous times on the way to visit friends in Wisconsin, struck me as a nice enough town. There was a unusual indoor water park complex there with some attached hotel/retail space and a huge clock tower that had a Tilted Kilt restaurant on the end.
That was always my lunch or dinner stop (hey, the food was actually decent, surprisingly) because it was about the right point in the drive depending on when I got on the road. Was very easy to head north into WI from right there, too.
I was disappointed to learn they leveled the whole thing a year or two ago now for redevelopment. Sure it was dated, but it was a cool complex from the outside in a style you just don't see anymore. I get a bit nostalgic for that 70's and 80's architecture now since it was dominant in my childhood and so much has now been leveled in the name of "progress". Same reason I get bummed out when they reskin one of the few really distinctive local strip malls from the 80's into the bland, homogenized fake plaster and flagstone highlight style they build all the new ones.
Anyway, excuse my brief diversion there regarding Rockford.

You too, eh? Now and then you get a freeze/thaw/freeze/thaw winter that yields a bumper crop. But it makes for great arrow head foraging.
