I also have a 5000x that a co-worker gave me about 10 years ago. Had one channel out. I put in new fuses and it worked for about 15 minutes, than puffff. Lots of burnt parts on one of the driver boards (1040-1). The other board is clean. Doesn't sound like much of a chance on finding the new style boards. Too bad, it's a nice looking unit. May have to come up with plan b or c or .....

I have a Sansui 5000 that I bought in SEA in 1969. The Sansui rep modified it to a 5000A. It worked fine until 1994 when I got no output. Local repair center "repaired the AM/FM power supply" and all was OK untill a few years ago when a similiar failure struck. This time I went out and bought a decent Pioneer amp and left my friend in the basement.
After reading this thread last week I dusted it off and checked it out. It has the F-1040 (no -1) boards but there is no sign of any damaged or burnt components. Guess now that I should do some circuit tracing, or break down and take it to the shop.
If I can get it revived, I wonder if I should consider this update mod.

Is there a way to defeat this feature, as in to completely wire around it in some way? I have one, I love how it sounds, but I have a tech and I would NEVER attempt to repair something so ready to explode in my hands!

This has been hashed over many times. Because the Dolby Board is an integral part of the tape inputs and outputs it just can't be done without loosing some functions of the Amp.

This thread is terrific, I am looking to rebuild my 5000a, anyone know where I can source parts? IE, the
(4) NTE-605a or STV-2h diodes.
100pf capacitor
(2) 2sc2240 or 2sc631
150 ohm 2 watt resistor
Most sources say the diodes are no longer available. Recommendations on a substitute?

Here is hand made RE-99 remote control unit very easy to doing this part.
I have to made it ant i've test it very well working at this time.ALL functions
as working the orginal model of RE-99 the same. Not including Condenser microphone at this circuit,there is as you see 27 ohm resistor not orginal
because hard fint it so i do it my self 10+10+7 ohm serial connection for reset
buton at botom of PCB

I have a Echowars restored Sansui 9090db. At the time of restoration, 2008, Glen said the Dolby board was working fine, and left it be.
Now, when I turn it on, the left channel will not play until I get the volume past 9 oclock, which for a receiver clipping at 161 wpc, is rather loud.
When the Dolby is engaged, the tone comes thru on both sides, but on "play" only on the right.
Today, when I fired it up, I let it sit for 1 hour. Came back, both channels playing excellently. But the left channel dropout upon startup is getting pretty predictable.
I have too much invested in this, and if it is indeed that Dolby board, I cannot in good conscience sell it.
Any input is appreciated, and if anyone here is fortified enough to tackle this, shipping and paying for repair isn't out of the question. LBPete, if YOU had trouble, there's no way I could begin to fix this.

before getting buried in Dolby issues try exercising the tape monitor buttons to see if you can influence the issue....
I will try that, but I've been all over those. Seems if I turn it on, let it sit awhile (say, 20 minutes) there's ZERO problems.
It just frightens me, since I have put so much into this very beloved receiver. If it has to be tore down to repair, I'll go that route, but don't wish to. Shipping scares me, and this thing has already been from Texas to Ky to Kansas City back to Ky.
