That's the best mod one can do to the G series receiver, my G 8k got the same treatment applied by LB Pete.
My only gripe about that series of receivers is the funky "wood grained vinyl" applied when it was made.
Your receiver is looking great!

i know i spent a hour with a heat glue and a scraper getting the old veneer off i bolted the to pieces together to see how it looked with the new veneer and man i forgot how big this thing was:music:

I'm thinking of removing the vinyl off my 8080 which will be my first attempt at this. I was thinking of using a hair dryer but maybe I'll pick up a heat gun instead

Looks great. That is very good quality fine grain oak veneer.

To remove the vinyl, try this. First use a razor knife to score the vinyl lengthwise from one side to the other. These smaller strips are easier to peel than full width.

You can use a heat gun to soften the glue and it will peel a lot easier. If you do this, there will be a lot of that "rubber" glue left on the wood. It needs to be sanded off if you are using wood glue for the veneer. The aggressive sanding necessary to get that glue off can leave low spots on the wood especially around the edges. That all has to be filled. All this adds a lot more prep work.

What I've been doing lately is just warming the vinyl to make it a little more pliable but not so much to soften the glue. On a sunny day here I just leave it in the sun for a couple of hours. If it's too cold outside to leave it in the sun, a hair dryer might be a good substitue. Just don't get it too hot.

It's harder to get the vinyl off this way and it will pull some of the wood with it. But it doesn't leave any glue behind and the somewhat roughen surface is a nice "toothy" surface for the wood glue. A little light sanding is all it needs and all the edges stay sharp.

That's very helpful advice, thank you :thmbsp:
My skills in this area are lax to say the least. I will attempt the 8080 myself but I'll have to save the case on my G-9000 for the pros...which leads me to ask, does anyone know of an AK'er in Canada that can do a case veneer job for me? The case on my 9000 really does need to be done.
