Sansui G-9000 Oval Capacitor 're-stuff'

I actually have a G-901DB, but they all have the same 4x oval capacitors. I'm having the unit fully recapped but my tech has not re-stuffed the oval caps before and doesn't want to tackle that project.

I've asked around AK to some who have done this before, but they either do not respond or are no longer offering the service.

In a time when these receivers are so popular, I'd have to think someone out there is offering this service. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks!

Not aware of anyone offering it presently as a paid service. Kale (who is a true Sansui fanatic if ever there was one) has done them in the past, but isn't presently so far as I'm aware. He is also in Croatia, which makes the logistics of shipping them difficult in the covid era with its attendant shipping delays and shutdowns.

The biggest difficulty in doing these IMHO is how to re-seal the cans securely when finished. Kale had comissioned custom imprinted very high grade shrink wrap for the job, and when completed they looked excellent and were securely assembled.

In any case, I think you will need to roll your own, or find a tech willing to do it. Hopefully someone else here may have a lead. This has been the back of my mind for a while too, as I have a G-9000 and a couple of AU-919's myself that will need them done before too much longer. Not looking forward to it.

I'm said tech, so looking forward to suggestions....
It's a bother how it's not just the oval size, but also the screw terminals that make it a bear, especially in the AU-919 where the power supply board is supported by it.

Well, I wish I had some better insight or advice to offer. I know they can be done, and have read postings about gutting them. When I reach the point where one of my amps has to have them redone, I'll probably just suck it up and do them myself (and be pissed about it the whole way through).

I guess my quick and dirty solution would be to find some plain heatshrink of the needed size and just put a band of it around the bottom inch of the cans. It won't really be seen much anyway once assembled, and as long as the top down view looks normal I can live with that.

Besides, I'm getting more pragmatic in advancing middle age and can no longer indulge my anal-retentive perfectionism to the extent I could 20 years ago,. Grandiose plans have to be scaled back to reality these days or I won't get anything finished.

It might be easier to make a small replacement PCB that takes the place of the original can and mount two caps on it. Then it would look similar to the G22000.

I think someone on AK has done that. A board with four caps and looks like the G-8000.

The last G9000 I restored, I never replaced the Oval caps or re-stuffed them.
I extensively tested the Ovals and they were actually in exceptional condition. They may well be completely fine.
But for another 40 years? If I'm restoring the rest of the unit, I don't want to say to the customer "Everything is new and great! Well.....except for this part. They seem good, hopefully they stay in spec." I would not feel great about that.

Or with a little dremel work, you could do this. There is better all around air flow too...

It worked for what was needed at the time, there are plenty of ways to work around it, the one above from Skywatcher is what I'll be doing on the next one I have to do.
I have re-stuffed the ovals on my first G9000DB and its a disgusting and extremely time consuming job.
I think using clamps and standard caps which utilise the pressed holes in the chassis which the G8000 use is the best way.

I tend to concur with @kevzep here the more I stew on it. While staying original looking is nice, I don't think I'd have any issue foregoing tbe oval caps and putting really good round ones in their place. I'd probably make up some legit looking Sansui logo-printed covers for the top of each cap in tan on black as done on the oval ones, just in circular form.

The other possibility may be if an oval shaped black plastic container of some sort could be found or fabricated and slid over two round caps (glued in place perhsps) just to emulate the look if it matters that much. Having had large electrolytic caps open a couple of times, Kev is right, it's a disgusting (and somewhat hazardous) job to gut them.

I know the oval ones look cool because they're different, and were customized for the job, but the return on investment in restuffing them isn't quite there, for me anyway.

For now, we will see how it operates off the originals. Following the guidelines set by AK member Kale, I'm pretty sure I can do this myself. It is simply time consuming. I'd be best off doing it before the patience for big projects in me runs out! AK member Deltalight (Bill) had the most extensive methods which were very impressive. Sadly, he has retired and I haven't heard from him in some time. When we last spoke he mentioned health issues forced him to stop. It is possible he is no longer with us.

I've never never worked on/seen/heard the big Gs, only in photos. Are the filter caps the same as the au-919? I don't think the 919 filter caps were that difficult to restuff. Here are the photos I took when I did mine: https://audiokarma.org/forums/index.php?threads/au-919-recap.932305/#post-14262299

Yes, I believe they are the same. And, your method looks the easiest by avoiding new shrink wrap. Although mine is a bit dirty and may look better with new wrap!

Once you put the lid on, you don't see the innards anyways. :D But you do hear what comes out of them. Eye Candy is only good if you can see it.

Since is a hobby for me I restuff if the unit deserve it, Granted nobody sees it, but is like hidden dovetails on woodworking or good lacing on tube gear point to point, (I know they are there).
Now, if a ''client'' request it I would charge every minute of the work, otherwise I would use the more practical approach of clamps... as always, it depends.
