Sansui G-9000 Oval Capacitor 're-stuff'

Rather than restuff, just go with new caps. If you want to keep the original look, dremel off the top of the OEM caps at the base and drop them on top with a bit of glue stick to hold them in place. The new caps tend to be much smaller, and you'd even be able to increase the values if you want, long as you don't go below the original voltages.

The screw mount base must be kept. Glueing on the label would look bad and cheesy. Also not even sure two circular new caps would fit snugly without some sort of holder.

Not a bad idea if your replacements caps are a small enough diameter and you can mount them close enough together. The oval can is deceptive too. The core cap elements inside are quite small with lots of space to spare. I still have the old oval caps and clamps from the G-9000 I rebuilt where the owner opted for the 4 separate caps. I keep mulling over the idea of restuffing them for future use in something.
 
I'd hang onto them, either to restuff for a future restoration or sell to someone who needs them. Would be short sighted to just toss them as scrap.

Another thought just occurred to me, the version used in the G-9000 is marked differently than the ones used in the AU-919, dewlite being the same value. That needs to be considered if buying a set restuffed from someplace like QRXrestore.

Oh they're not going to get tossed. :beerchug: They just look too cool :beatnik: on my shelf. But I might part with them is someone really needs them. They tested "alright" with my Peak ESR meter, but that is only a low voltage test. At least they won't throw up a bright DBT "test"... :p
 
For now, we will see how it operates off the originals. Following the guidelines set by AK member Kale, I'm pretty sure I can do this myself. It is simply time consuming. I'd be best off doing it before the patience for big projects in me runs out! AK member Deltalight (Bill) had the most extensive methods which were very impressive. Sadly, he has retired and I haven't heard from him in some time. When we last spoke he mentioned health issues forced him to stop. It is possible he is no longer with us.

yes Bill ( Deltalight ) has passed. he had cancer. last year i believe, i was told this from Dave Olsen a tech i use on my tube gear who knew Bill as well. apparently he was assaulted and had severe head injury and when hospitalized they found he had advanced cancer that he wasnt aware of. Bill restored a couple receivers for me and used a dual filter cap replacement he designed on my Marantz 2285B. i believe his handle is from a flashlight he designed called the deltalight.

Yes I found his obituary, which had nothing written about him at all. And he did work on engineering LED lights before they were mainstream. I feel bad about someone as talented as him, passing away, without any kind of recognition or words. He and I had many conversations over the years. When he fell ill, he only told me he had health conditions and couldn’t work on restorations anymore. And he seemed to no longer want to engage in conversations at all, which was very unlike him. After some time, I figured whatever he had wasn’t good, and he did not want to discuss it. I remember the last time I saw him was when I picked up my Sansui 9090. As I was walking away he said “that’s the best 9090 I’ve ever done”. It’s a special receiver to me, just for that experience. I wonder what happened to his own gear?

In addition, the G-901DB is done with re-stuffed oval caps as well and sounds fantastic! Currently working on the cabinet and am putting on cherrywood veneer.
 
The last G9000 I restored, I never replaced the Oval caps or re-stuffed them.
I extensively tested the Ovals and they were actually in exceptional condition. They may well be completely fine.
I agree. My 919 didn't need it. Also "LEESTEREO" does not always replace or restore them either. That says a lot.
 
The other possibility may be if an oval shaped black plastic container of some sort could be found or fabricated and slid over two round caps (glued in place perhsps) just to emulate the look if it matters that much.

If you go this route, I would be more than happy to make the decal that goes on the top!

For the case you have highlighted in the schematic snip, easy answer, No. - in other words you MUST use 80V plus capacitors for C703 & C704.

That is if I understand your question correctly....

(it sounds like you would like to try and use lower voltage capacitors for C703 & C704 ?)
