I'm playing my 7000 with horns, & it's a great match. :thmbsp: This is definitely my favorite solid state amp so far, & having the tuner & preamp built in doesn't hurt. ;)
 
Owner of the lowly Six, it is my bedroom system with a Dual 1009 sk2. I give it a listen almost every night. :thmbsp:

Speaker relay ? For protection ? Must be modified by someone as original protection consist only of SCR and Quick Acting Fuses, :scratch2:

Yes, I think so as well. My other three Eights did not have relays so I kept this one. It sounds much fresher than others so I think some work was done.
 
Amongst my collection, I have a Six and a 7000. Both are great receivers. The 7000 sure has plenty of drive! :D

Awesome 8 owner here, removed the protection circuit board, no relay. One of my favorites ever.

No it did not, it had this small board the seemed to ground the speaker outputs upon a malfunction. It did such a good job it took some transistors out on the driver board, so I removed this tiny board and replaced the transistors with vitage Toshibas. It works great now.
 
The Eight Deluxe and the Seven have relay based protection circuits but not the Eight. That's an interesting mystery. Could it be a Seven or Eight Deluxe with an Eight faceplate? What is the serial number? Can you look at the power transistors to see what their ID number is? The Eight used all NPN outputs, the Seven and Eight Deluxe used NPN/PNP pairs.

Hi Pete: The serial number is 222011560. Everything says "Eight" including the voltage selector cover and faceplate. Definitely not a 7000, the 7000 has three large filters, mine has two. Interesting question on the outputs, I'll have to take a look and maybe a few photos. Sam.
 
Seems to be an Eight Deluxe modification. Your Eight is manufactured in January 1972 and Deluxe model came 1973 but eventually a few late 72.

However no relay protection introduced beginning of 72 or before as far as I know. Interesting Eight you have. :scratch2:

I had a look at the outputs and they are the same. Motorola MJ15024, 9734, Mexico. They appear to be replacements.

How does a pair of NPN's differ from the Deluxe's NPN/PNP pairs?
 
Sam, those are definitely modern replacements. Still in production and quite beefy for this application.

You definitely have a mystery on your hands. The fact that the outputs were changed indicates someone has been into it. The question is whether he also modified the protection circuit. If so, he's a pretty clever guy(or gal).

The amplifier design determines the configuration of the outputs. The Eight Deluxe, Six and Seven have newer design amps than the Eight. Sansui went back to the earlier design for the 881 and 9090/8080 and then returned to the newer design with the 9090db/8080db. Go figure.

That's good news on my outputs. The work that was done on my "Mystery Eight" seems good and is certainly neat. A keeper for sure.

BTW, I'm trying to get my buddy to bring over the restored Eight you did some time ago. It had a totally different sound from stock. The new filters you put in looked undernourished!

Now, to get my hands on an Eight Deluxe...
 
got an eight from a friend who was cleaning out his basement. I need a power cord! It seems that I did well from everybody's feedback... Can't wait to fire it up
 
After reading this thread I am going to look for one. Which of the single digit series(or 7000) is the best. I am wondering about about the sound compared to a 9090db or 8080db series. I already have some of these and I wondering if it is worthy of grabbing and putting in my collection. Dont have a clue what they are worth.
