Sansui SR-838 turntable sold on eBay above $1,000

This turntable has now achieved the status of the vaunted Marantz 6300, a turntable that folks must have to 'match' and a beauty. These two significant benefits contribute to a huge TAX to be paid by the buyer. These tables do not perform anywhere near the prices they bring on the bay but it is not for us to judge other than saying someone was willing to pay the tax. If you got it might as well spend it. And a matching system or a beauty of a turntable are something that are worth the funds to some. I've watched these occasionally and this one is nicely presented but the truly museum quality ones I have seen have the box, packing, all the accessories and extras that came with them new.

What TT would you want for that $1000? Lots of choices. Maybe about that price, I have a couple I have built for less that I like the TD-125/SME and the Kenwood KD-600 with a Magnepan Unitrac. And I have had two of the SR-838s, both with what are probably very happy owners reading about the thousand dollar 838.

The thin aluminum spacer that comes with Denon cartridges looks to be the same.

Have not compare them side by side though........

I am happy with my SR-222 MK II s-l1600 (2).jpg and think getting a good deal ($75) is superior to paying top dollar. Also, I prefer a belt drive to direct drive so mine is better in that respect too. I also like the simple look of my turntable plate over the modern look of the SR-838. I even prefer the MK II to the MK IV and MK V due to the S shaped tone arm.

There were 48 bids on the SR-838 and the winner submitted only one 3 seconds before the auction closed. It is impossible to see what the winners maximum bid was. The next highest bit was submitted 8 seconds prior to the close. My point is, bidding in an Ebay auction only bids up the price. If you really really want an item you must resort to the same tactics as those you are bidding against. Make your highest maximum bid at the very end of the auction and be prepared to pay that much if others bid just below it. That is a fair practice and those who disagree are often called losers.

Well, someone just listed a Sansui headshell with the spacer. I over paid, but have been looking for one for a while.
