Sanyo TP-825D questions

Hello,

This is my first post on AK. I have been lurking for a few weeks and have already learned quite a bit from you guys.

Yesterday I bought a Sanyo TP-825D from a CL seller. When I visited them to pick it up they had it playing and it sounded awful. I dismissed the sound as being a problem with the record they were playing as it was obviously warped as a potato chip.

Now that I have the turntable at home it still sounds awful and skates at the slightest breath. Below are pictures of the stylus. As far as I can tell it's wore out as I can't see or feel a "needle". Would any of you be so kind as to give your opinion on this stylus and, if it is wore out, what a good replacement would be?

I will use this turntable for home listening. Mostly 60s and 70s pop music and a little classical.

The stylus tip in picture #2 seems to be very encrusted.

Do you have any Magic Eraser in the kitchen or bath room? :scratch2:

As a matter of fact I do. :scratch2:

Should I dab the stylus with a solvent or rubbing alcohol before trying the Magic Eraser? I guess at this point I can't ruin anything.

Thanks for the tip. I would have never thought of gunk. That stylus looks like a wore out nub to my novice eyes.

Use the Magic Eraser (the white one) dry.

Drop the tone arm/ headshell with the stylus down into the Magic Eraer gently.

Pick the tone arm up and drop it down again, repeat this procedure several times.

Do not drag the needle or stylus across the Magic Eraser, or you will rip out the stylus.:no:

It should clear away some of the encrustation.:thmbsp:
 
Welcome to AK! As Balifly said, it looks pretty dirty but, as you said, it may be that there's no diamond tip any more. I can't see one and, even with the crud, it should be apparent in photo #2.

By the way, that's a very good cartridge. It's the Radio Shack branded Shure VST III, the "little brother" to the V15 Type V.

If indeed the tip is shot that should be a cart worth replacement of the stylus on that TT for. I have that TT with a V15 IV and it is very nice to my ears (as with all combinations YMMV) and I would think well worth the effort, if not there may be more than a few of us here who would take it off your hands!
 
Well I tried the Magic Eraser trick to no avail. Then I put the cartridge under a microscope and saw why. The stylus is shot.

The stylus arm is sawed halfway through near where it protrudes from the cartridge. At other end the tip is just a worn tube. There is no needle. Photos below.

How do I replace the stylus? I tried removing it from the cartridge but was unsuccessful. Also what is a part number that I would need?

I'm also thinking about just replacing the entire assembly with a something like an Ortofon 2M Red just because its in my budget.

I've never bought or serviced a needle so I appreciate everyone's help.

To remove the stylus refer to the 3rd photo in your original post. Grab the part labelled Shure and pull it straight out toward the front. That entire stylus assembly is what gets replaced.

Thanks for the help. The old stylus slid right out. I ordered the Shure N97XE replacement.

The next thing is turntable feet. If it's not one thing it's two. :D

Hopefully this thing plays nice when it's done.
 
boreas/John and a few other AK members have Sanyo turn tables.

So if you have any specific questions, ask away! :music: :yes:

I saw that same table on craigslist, nice pickup! I own one myself and can attest that it's a fine performer. Sanyo turntables are hit and miss, but the TP-825D is what we like to call a "sleeper". TheN97xe should work very well.

BTW, check out vinyl engine. A few months ago, I uploaded the instruction/owner's manual. Among other things, it will show you how to set up the cartridge overhang (on page 2). The overhang indicator sits between the speed selectors.

That's a nice table. There are several fans on AK, including myself. I have one in my bedroom system and at times I'm tempted to put it in my main system instead of the Pioneer PL-550.

If the stylus doesn't clean up properly, order a new one, then check the alignment of the cartridge and other setup fun stuff like tracking force, etc. and you should be fine.

The stylus was shot. I put it under a microscope and it looked like someone dragged it down a driveway. The needle was long gone and all that remained was a ground off hollow tube.

They don't sound good like that. :no:

I can't imagine how much dust and pizza sauce that poor old stylus must have cleaned out of record grooves to get in that bad of condition. And the seller was proud of the sound. True story. That was the ultimate YMMV that I've ever heard. :D

That cantilever (the tube) didn't get that way from wear. It was snapped off. The seller should be horsewhipped. :)

The turntable cleaned up nicely. I still need to read through the cover restoration tips here and try one out. I found replacement feet in the hi-fi department at ACO. The stylus should arrive tomorrow. Then I'll finally get to hear what I have. :music:

Looks great :yes: I think you'll really enjoy this TT.

Can I ask what feet you purchased (is it possible to post a picture of them?)
I have a few components with missing feet; never though of going to ACO. So you went to the aisle with A/V connectors, cables, etc.?
