Saw a B-17 Flying Fortress flying today.

It's amazing how far we went from 1935-1950, yet now we're still flying the B-52 which was designed in what, 1947? Not that there haven't been improvements, like the F-22, but the jump from the 1970s F-15 to the F-22 took forever.

And still flying "the tanker" too. Two classic Boeing airframes. In addition to that, some of those bombers and tankers have far fewer flying hours on them than conventional military aircraft, cause from the 50's through the early 90's they were spending 1/3 of their time sitting on SAC alert and not flying.

I saw the same one last Sunday in Madison WI. All I can say is... WOW! It was pretty cool seeing that old thing flying by at what seemed like about 25 mph.

I got to rummage around "Fifi" one morning about 15 years ago when it she was up at Tri-Cities airport, preparing to leave, they'd had an airshow the previous day... What struck me was, the B-17 & 24 I'd been thru were definitely VERY OLD aircraft, but the -29 didn't seem anywhere near as old-But they were maybe 5 years apart in age...It was a subtle thing, nothing you could put yr finger on, but the Flying Fortress was like a machine from a different age. George is right, ALL of 'em were sized for 12-yr old kids...A fatass 6 footer like me was WAY outta his element in one...

I saw FIFI fly at the Yankee airforce air show 3 or 4 years ago.

I also met Paul Tibbets at an airshow there selling a book, which he signed.

Tuskegee P-51C Redtail comes home

The sky was full today with a squadron of T-6's with the P-51 in the lead in a welcome home after a full restore after a fatal crash in Red Wing in 2004. Wish I would have known about it sooner so I could have at the airport, but this Sat. they will be having a free open house 10-4 and I'm sure they're will be more flights. I'll be down there with camera in hand, hopefully I'll see some local AK aviator buffs there too. Here's the full artical http://www.redtail.org/?p=163 The B-25 will be flying giving rides for a donation. Here's a link to one of the local news feed http://wcco.com/local/P51.mustang.restoration.2.1116594.html
