Schiit Fans ?

So I did nothing all day long except play with my new Freya 2 in every listening mode possible:

Passive mode: "Meh"

Solid State: pretty darn good, sounds just like my older Freya+ with the LISST tubes installed. IIRC the LISST are "depletion mode mosfets", and the new Freya 2 has those built right into the circuit board.

Tube Buffer/Solid State gain: most excellent on a lot of stuff, sometimes lacks the 3D effect of all tubes.

Solid state buffer, tube gain: kind of weird, didn't care for it.

All Tubes: This is the best mode when the gain is set to LOW. I'm used to the Freya+ where when you use tube mode you automatically get a 12db boost, with Freya 2 you can choose low or high. I found with the gain on low there was much more clarity in the background instruments and voices. It seemed that in high gain my tubes were trying to put out too much power and it lead to a bit of distortion (?). The specs from Schiit show a better S/N ratio in Low gain and lower distortion (not that anyone could hear the difference in those minuscule numbers) so that may be why I like it in low gain better. I just have to train my brain to set the volume knob at 1:30 PM instead of straight up noon.

All Tube, Low Gain
Gain: 1 (0dB)
Frequency Response: 20Hz-20Khz, -0.05db
THD: <0.006%, 20Hz-20KHz, at 1V RMS
IMD: <0.007%, CCIR
SNR: >124dB, A-weighted, referenced to 4V RMS

All Tube, High Gain
Gain: 4 (12dB)
Frequency Response: 20Hz-20Khz, -0.05db
THD: <0.003%, 20Hz-20KHz, at 1V RMS
IMD: <0.003%, CCIR
SNR: >115dB, A-weighted, referenced to 4V RMS
