Scott 299-D Stereomaster amplifier

Anyone know a fair price for an all-but mint Scott 299-D with original tubes? It includes a nice wooden case (some chipping along one side that could probably be masked with stain). Seller is asking $800. Thanks.

That’s a bit high imo. You can pick them up for a little more than half that if you keep an eye out. Even eBay prices are better

Thanks. It sounds like he might be willing to include the tuner for it as well at the same price, so that might make it more appropriate. I wondered the same about the price based on what I saw, though he says it's basically perfect and I've bought from him before. He's very reliable. Still, $800 does seem high.
 
Which tuner and does it also have the the wood cabinet?
I sold a nice unrestored Sherwood S5500 and S3000 V for $550 a couple of years ago. No wood cases. The cases add a bit to value so, those may be a little high but not by much. If you could get the pair for $600, I'd say you were doing really well.

It's the 310D. Doesn't have a case, and the front plate is not perfect. I'm attaching a pic. I'd be interested to hear what you think.

It looks like it also has the classic Scott dial crack (just above horizontal on the left side). Tuners, with a few exceptions, just aren't worth that much. People put crazy multi-hundred dollar asking prices on them, but the fact is that the last 310D on eBay sold for $86 (and it had a crack-free dial!).

Has any work been done to the amp? I don't care how well it has been cared for, it will need caps at some point.

If you add up the amp, case, and tuner separately he's pretty much asking top dollar even compared to eBay. The 299 isn't crazy rare, I'd keep looking.
 
In orignal condition working yes is a bit hi.
If the units have been service with new caps not just cleaned helps a little.

The 299D is a very nice model. Go give it a listen and do some horse trading. Around $500?
Think right now selling gear would be slow, plenty of people hurting needing money.

Thanks! I noticed the cracks as well. The amp has been recapped and I know from past experience that he'll fix anything for only the cost of parts, but it does seem high. Just not sure I can justify it. A shame, cause it does sound nice and I know I can rely on him. However, he said that he was going to sell it for $1000 to 1100, so now I'm not sure if I can really trust him so much if he's claiming $800 is a deal. Oh well, buyer beware and all that. Thanks again.
 
Not knowing your area for comparisons.
A 299C recapped and updated was on CL for well over a year selling here for around $600 IIRC.
 
Yeah, if he thinks that is an $1100 amp he's nuts. Do some Scotts fetch that much, sure, but not the 299.

I'll have to check that one out. No rush really to get his as I have too many amplifiers already!

I already spent way too much on a McIntosh 1500. Got it for $850, but ended up sinking more money into it than I'd like to admit. In the seller's defense, I bought that one from someone else.
 
Mainly I'm just looking to get a good quality tube amp without going broke. Might be a losing proposition though. I also recently purchased a monster Kenwood and it sounds great, though it needs a cleaning to keep the speakers from cutting out. I also need a new table/cabinet to house it in. It's too big for the one I have!
 
For whatever reason - folks underestimate the cost of a recap (assuming all caps are replaced - including cans) - that’s over $200 in parts plus what 10 hours labor? If you are going to compare ebay prices make sure it’s apples to apples. The last one on ebay sold for $510 plus shipping - untested. I think $800 asking price is fair - for a fully restored excellent condition 299D.

Thanks! I really appreciate your input. Considering he stands behind what ever he sales, it's probably fair. Recapping is costly, for sure.
