Scott 299b Restoration

I went back to my notes and checked the cathode voltages on my 299B pre-amp tubes (V1 and V6), and all the tube voltages were well within tolerances. My cathode voltages were right around 0.6 VDC, compared to 0.5 VDC on the schematic. A note on the schematic: the 299B schematic in the AK database and generally available is an H H Sams reproduction. I have not been able to find an original Scott 299B schematic, but it's worthwhile noting that the Scott schematics for the 299A (with virtually the same pre-amp circuit and voltages) shows 0.8 V for the V1 and V6 cathodes. The Sams schematics are known for having errors present and this might be one. If that's the case, your cathode voltages may be spot on. In fact, the Scott schematic for the 222B with the same pre-amp circuit and voltages shows 1.0V on the cathodes.

So, I'm thinking you don't need to sweat the cathode voltages at about 0.8 VDC. I'm thinking this is not the cause of the noise you're hearing. Another thought: I always expect some tube rush in the phono stages of vintage integrated amps, particularly at 3/4 to full volume. It's not really meaningfully present at normal listening volumes in the amps I've worked on and listened to. Both of the 299B's I've done had Telefunken front end tubes--known for low noise.

From your posts, the noise appears to be worse than this. If that's the case, this is one of the best threads I found discussing tube noise when I was researching it a while back:

It suggests that the main cause of hiss/rush comes from the 'shot effect' that can be magnified by excessive cathode heating or tube design. It seems to me that this boils down to a couple of things for you, since you've already done things suggested in the thread like replacing plate and grid resistors. First, try more tubes. The RCA's and Sovtek 12AX7 LPS tubes should be low noise, but you never know. Have you tried swapping your line amp 12AX7's with the pre-amp tubes? Maybe give that a try.

Another thing to try (as BinaryMike suggested) imight be to further lower the filament voltages for the 12AX7's served by your bias/filament supply by fiddling with the RC chain resistor just ahead of the filament take off. I think your last reading said you were about -48VDC here, so you might try taking it down to -46 or -45 VDC.

Brent, that's about all I've got on the noise front, but would love to hear other thoughts as well if I'm off base or am missing something.

Well, I did think of one more thing, but this is pretty basic and you may have already done it: be sure to clean all the switch contacts, particularly the rotary switches for equalization and mode selection, with a good contact cleaner like DeOxit D-5 and work them many times. Don't use an excess amount and blow off the excess with canned air and let things sit 15 min or so before trying with power. Couldn't recall if you've done this.
 
Dave, thanks again for the suggestions. I'm a teacher on summer break, so I really have nothing better to do than obsess over my projects! It's just enough noise to bug me, and since I mostly listen to vinyl, I want to sort it out if I can. I will read that link you posted and take my heater voltages again. That may be the solution in the end.

I have cleaned all of the switches and selectors a few times with deoxit as well as the tube sockets. I've tried several different tubes there that are quiet in other equipment. I kept thinking it might be the phono pickup selector switch or the main selector, but haven't made any progress with anything I've tried! On to the heater string! I will take all of the heater voltages again, try upping the value of R123, the last 18ohm resistor before the filaments, and see what happens.
 
Measuring just now, all four of my preamp tubes had between 11.5-12v on the heaters coming from around a -47.5v supply, which is a little higher than the -46 on the schematic. I had some of the original 18ohm dropping resistors that I replaced since they were all a little high, and I put one of those in series with the last 18ohm R123 to increase that value to around 36ohms. This dropped the heater string supply to around -46v and put approx 11.5v on each of preamp heaters when I remeasured. However, it still didn't seem to affect the phono noise.

I could try upping the value of R123 to drop my heater string supply a little more, but I am not sure it will lower the noise. Of course, making this change also caused my bias supply to move from -26v to -24v, so increasing that resistor even more may mess with my bias supply too much. I could drop the value of R122 to the bias supply (which was already a 6800 ohm resistor in my amp originally instead of 8200 on the schematic) to try to get my bias voltage back, but I am not sure this is worth all of the trouble. I may end up ordering a handful of resistors to try out in those positions, but it'll have to wait until I need to place a larger parts order. Can't pay for any more shipping on this sucker.

I'm open to any other suggestions, as it still seems like I am getting a little too much noise compared to other tube preamps and integrateds I am used to. It's really only noticeable between tracks now that I have it hooked back up and am giving it more of a listen. I'm going to try some more forgiving speakers than my Heresy's too. It really does sound excellent. Probably time to call it done, but I have said that before...
 
I would check your ground bus next. Find a photo of an untouched unit and trace out the grounds exactly as wired, from scott, and verify yours is set up exactly the same. (I'm taking a wild guess here)

Off topic, kinda, but I'm a retired teacher. One of the things that kept me (semi) sane was that I always had a vintage stereo system setup in my classroom. I would bring up a different tube amp every month and change speakers every couple of months. I would play music between classes when the kids (I taught high school Social Studies - World History, American History, U.S. Government, Economics) were coming and going between classes and I'd also play instrumentals, mostly jazz, while they were doing seatwork. It seemed to help them focus better.

I have a 299b but it's been a long time since I restored it so I haven't followed this thread closely but quieter resistors in the phono stage should help. I'm not sure if I rebuilt the phono stage on mine since I don't play much vinyl. I've got a couple of other Scotts, a 222(B,C? - 7189 output) and a 299A that I should restore sometime.

I've been through reconfiguring my grounds a couple times to no effect.

I had a setup with turntable and all in my classroom last year. Kids really liked it and I was surprised how many of them buy records even if they don't have anything to play them on. I teach HS math. I'm going to be starting an electronics club with our physics teaher this year which should be pretty fun too.

The phono section on this amp has driven me a little crazy, but I'm not giving up! It sounds so nice otherwise.
 
Thanks for the suggestions. The turntable is grounded, and the rushing happens at the same level with or without anything connected to the phono inputs. I have cleaned the tube sockets and tried different tubes in the preamp section. The rushing was present before I changed the plate resistors to new metal films. Nothing I have done has really had an effect on the noise, and I can't figure out what could be causing it!
I just rebuilt a Scott 233 . I do notice a bit more noise using the phono inputs.
You might try rebuilding the PEC module. I'm waiting on some 560k resistors to rebuild mine.
I used a bucking transformer and it took care of all the higher than spec voltages.

Thanks for the suggestion, but the 299 doesn't use PEC's for the phono section. It uses all discreet components already. I'm still going to try to lower the heater voltages for the preamp tubes and may change some more components at the phono tubes as a last effort to reduce the noise.

My Bad, I see the 299b is discrete. The 233 and I believe 299d later circuits , seem to have the second half of the phono stage with a 100k plate and 1.5k cathode and 120k feedback across the cathodes. this might have been a noise reduction modification as the 100k/1.5k has less gain I believe.
you could parallel some resistors easily to test.

Also, I found the .047uf in series with the .022uf cap to be partially responsible for the low frequency rolloff in the phono stage. I calculated it out to about .0149. you really do not need the .047uf . I replaced it with a wire and the phono stage sounds much better.
 
The 100K anode with 1.5K cathode resistor change was apparently intended to improve load driving capability. It's probably near gain-neutral.

The function of the 0.047uF cap is to block DC bias from the input stage cathode, which can cause amplifier switching pops and noisy gain controls in attached tape decks.
