Sears tube radio

I just picked this up at thrift for $10 it looks really cool and has phono input and ext. speakers inputs + tubes.


Sears Silvertone model #6022 radio.

The bad news is I only get hum out of it.

Sounds like it needs new caps. Would about lay money down that this is an "AA7"-an all-American five, w/2 more tubes added for FM reception. Should be an easy fix.

OK it works but only 1 speaker and there is a hum also and not affected by the volume.

I'd say chances are better that the caps are leaking and the speakers are ok. You need to change all the caps, they are way past their life expectancy. Be careful, that's probably a hot chassis meaning the metal of the chassis could be hot depending on how you plug it in. Be careful.

Thanks for the warning it look to be a hot chasis like you say.

I think I see that has 2 wires (red/blk) coming out the wax-filled end?

I also see a 3-way metal filter cap can.

I see they have a 4-way 80,40,30 and a 20 (just don't use the 20?) to replace the 3-way?

that would work although its not cheap but may be easier to install then doing individuals.

You can use 160 V caps in this - a LOT cheaper and they're quite small... but you'll probably need to add a terminal strip for connections.

I really don't wanna spend a lot on a $10 radio anyway to be honest.

I have been trying to figure out how to get the board out to work on it and finally figured it out.
The whole chassis slides right out after removing a few screws & nuts.

Now I can work on it and clean it up! :thmbsp:

Fwiw I discovered that the tuning knob can be pulled out to turn off AFC.

Hmm I see now that the filter can in this radio has different values then that one seems.

This filter can is 100uF 150V, 80uF 150v, 40uF 25v and it also has a paper cap 120uF like the one you show.

Unless it was changed previously I guess I should use the values in mine?

I am gonna try and restuff the filter can because there's not much room on board.
Hopefully the new caps will fit inside can.

This set DOESN'T have a lot of value...I'd just remove the old caps, solder the new ones in, & be done w/it...Just ENJOY the radio for what it is, & not worry about it. If it was something from the Twenties or Thirties, yes, then, restuffing might be called for...But this is a mass-market item from the Sixties, it REALLY ain't worth all the extra effort, IMHO. Like I said, just re-cap it, use it & ENJOY it...

while I do agree on recapping and enjoying, this does have a nice MCM styling that would appeal to many. I really like it.

To be honest it doesn't matter to me about looks but there is not much room on the board and just think this may be easier and get some experience re-stuffing.
I realize the last one on ebay went for $10 and not looking to flip it for profit. I spent $11 (inc. shipping) on caps + new speakers $22 lol.

I think it looks cool and its in excellent condition.
