while I do agree on recapping and enjoying, this does have a nice MCM styling that would appeal to many. I really like it.

That face plate is all metal only plastic is knobs and looks to be solid (walnut?) wood no veneer here.

I just got the new caps in and I guess I wont be restuffing the can because the 3 caps wont fit inside.:headscrat

I will make it fit on pcb one way or another.

OK I finally recapped (4 caps total) this radio and both new speakers are working but I can't get much volume out of the radio for some reason.

(Btw the new speakers fit the hole perfectly) I ended up gluing some wood strips inside case to mount OT's.

Also there is a hum and its there always whether on station or low volume.

I am thinking I have a bad tube and suspect maybe the 50C5 tube?.


There are 9 tubes (1 is for phono I can clearly see yet this one has no visible markings.)

The others are:

1@50HK6
2@20EZ7
2@18FX6A
1@18FW6A
1@18GD6

Anyone have any thoughts on this problem?

I only checked a couple resistors maybe I should check all of them?

Does anyone know what could be the problem (low volume and hum) here?

Short of replacing all tubes is there something that might cause this problem.

My first back in the day was a Silvertone pulled from a console. I mounted it and the speakers in cardboard boxes because of limited bedroom space. Looked bad but I sure had many evenings/nights enjoying my sound in my bedroom. Those were the days.
Most of my friends gave me a bad time because of the cardboard box mounting. So I had a different looking home project receiver and speakers - but it was tunes in my room.
Got me by fine until I later could afford something else.

Thats an interesting story but I really wanted some advice here on fixing this radio.

Anyone in birmingham have a tube tester?

It MIGHT be a tube - swap the 20EZ7s and see if anything changes... but hum in both channels may be the power supply.
