Sell now or later?

Like most Akers I have accumulated a considerable amount of audio items over the years in addition to my main listening system. Now that the wife and I are making retirement plans I am facing the dilemma of what to do with it all and interested in the AK communities opinion. We will be retiring overseas in 2017 and I plan to only bring one setup with me. The option for the rest is to sell it now, keep everything in storage and sell it all off in 3 years (hoping the value has increased), or a combination of the two. Curious what members think.

Storage costs money and is generally a waste of time and money. Make a list of what you have, and start testing and selling things one by one on Craigslist, AK, and eBay if necessary.

right now is a good time to sell vintage gear. plus you are not too far from the washington DC area so thats good

I'm thinking now is the time. Surely the used vintage market has hit it's peak and can't go on forever.

:thmbsp:I'm with the masses. Packing, moving, storing (with paying storage fees). Its a losing proposition. When I got divorced I put some stuff in storage (nothing as valuable as vintage audio). Just stuff I liked and thought I'd need in the future. I came to the realization after a year or so that I could throw it all away and then buy it new cheaper than continuing to store it.
My 2c. Congratulations on your retirement!
I hope you share your goodies with us!

Unless you have some TOTL gear or items that are current darlings or are sky rocketing in sale value, sell soon. Storage fees are a killer, and then half the gear that now is working, will not be working after being stored for three years.

Having a light load that is dependable and sounds good is a great thing. Having to worry about gear being stored seven thousand miles away is a bad thing. Convert the suckers to money, and enjoy spending it on doing things you will never again get a chance to do in your life. :thmbsp:

Now.

Good market, no storage.
No chance of any damage to equipment while storing or waiting.
Less to worry about later when you have plenty of other things to do.
Peace of mind from freeing yourself of things you don't intend to keep.
More time to savor the past while letting each piece go, making another person happy, and relaxing in the thought of less to contend with later.

Some Brands are UP...and some are Down...Flat to Down currently.

Storage is not cheap...And once it's there...Chances are you will not take them out.

I say better to Sell here as the goodies will be appreciated. Can you Post a list?

Ok, we are talking investment.

These are exactly words everyone said in 1997 for stock of Yahoo, eBay, Amazon. These companies had no earnings, lost huge $$$ every quarter, etc.

Negative news came every day.
For instance, when Barnes and Nobble announced they opened a website, everyone said it's the end of Amazon.
When Yahoo announced they opened online auction (free to buyers & sellers), everyone said it's the end of eBay.

Look at eBay and Amazon now. And where's Barnes and Nobble?

When everyone said it, it's time to do the opposite.

Speaking of vintage audio, storage fee is zero if keep collection in your house.

I believe non-collectibles go sideway, but very selective collectibles, TOTL go up, but must be in great condition. Especially speakers.

Thanks to all for the input. Retirement will be in the Philippines. As far as storage , it is in our garage so lots of room and no fees. Thinking I will follow the crowd, sell what I can now and use the money to complete my system with the rest going into a bank CD.
Going to take me a while to sort through, clean and list everything but 1st stop will be in barter town.

I have noticed a lot of young people are "buying turntables and started a record collection". Sort of a trendy thing to do these days.

But, I would not waste too much time with selling everything separate. It can be more trouble than its worth, plus someone could rob you.

Put the entire lot up for auction and some audio/speaker store owner will come buy it from you.

Sell now.

It isn't going to get much more valuable by 2017.

The market in the North America is quite large.

The means and cost of delivery to Europe, or South America is in your favor as well.

Be done with it.

Spread the joy and make a few bucks to boot.

After years of depressed prices, things are looking up for used audio gear. It's a seller's market.
Of course, each piece must be considered individually in this market, but the chances are pretty good that you can at least move the stuff on now.

Best of luck with your life changes whatever you decide.
