Semi or Auto Turntable.

Sam Cogley suggested PS-X70. I have a PS-X60 with the same arm. Unfortunately I can't give you any indication of how it sounds, because the turntable needs a lot of work .... most of the PS-X## series are highly regarded, from what I have read. See here: http://www.thevintageknob.org/sony-PS-X70.html

Thanks for the link. Didn't even know Sony makes TTs. The PS-X## series do look really nice and I bet they sound good too. The only down side (to me) would be that they don't have wooden base which is one of the 'must have.

I am lining up to buy a Denon DP-47F for $275 (assuming it is still available by Sunday). I have no idea if the price is low, decent or high but it is local. I have the DP-59L on my wanted list but the one on the CL is not too impressive condition wise. Good buy or not on the DP-47F? Thanks.

If I were you I would put that Shure on the Marantz and give it a listen. It is a respected budget cart. It can also be upgraded with a Jico SAS stylus. Hold tight until you decide on your final "keeper" turntable. That way you can match your cart to your arm/table.
If you don't know what is on the table now, keep your fingers crossed. It might be a nice vintage cart.

Good suggestion and I am keeping my fingers crossed on the cart. Also, I read that the M97xE needs break-in time as well. Anyway, have not heard from the seller regarding the shipping status. I hate doing business with this kind of people. Nothing much I can do now.

I have both the Shure M97xE and a Denon DL160. The 160 is a much better cart IMHO. But, with the HOMC cart, you will need to give it more volume to play at the same levels as an MM cart. And also keep in mind the 160 has a none replaceable stylus. You could have it retipped. but it's not a simple replacement. But those are minor problems compared to the sound they reproduce

Those PS-X## series tables are pretty nice. I have a 40, 55, and a 70.
If you go back a couple of generations there are some nice Sonys with wood bases. I've never owned one, so I can't recommend a particular model.

On another note, I seem to recall somebody offering wood bases for Technics SL1200 tables. KAB maybe?

Yes KAB does "drop-in" wood bases. Strikes me as a not too difficult diy project as well. Converting to autolift is a bit more difficult for the OP!

Technics SL-D303 and SL1300 for 15 Dollars.

So I stopped by my local flea market yesterday and picked up the D303 for $5 and comes without a cart. Went back to the flea market again today and found the SL1300 (for $10) and came with cart (not sure if any good), one LP but no 45 adapter - this TT was not there yesterday or I would have picked it up too.

The D303 is functioning flawlessly after cleaning up and re-greasing and it's got my M97XE cart on it at the moment.

The SL1300 automatic feature is working fine but the the sound is very faint. I tried cranking up my volune and it does not help. I am wondering if the two RCA jacks came loose from the inside as they don't appear to be stock cables. So I will open it up and check soon. The faint sound is just like when you connect the two RCA cables to a receiver without the phono pre-amp.

What else could be the problem with the faint sound on the SL1300? Thanks for your reply.

======================
Update:
Found the problem with the Sl1300 sound. Looked like someone was pulling/yanking on the RCA cables breaking the connection at the solder joints. Once I resoldered them I got sound.
Next is to setup the tonearm but not sure if I need to do the cart alignment. The cart which came with the SL1300 (photo) seems to be working fine.

Just picked the DP-47F up not too long ago today. So far I am happy with the buy:D. Will be reading more about this model to see if there are common issues which I need to be looked out for. Thanks.

That's a pretty good buy, imo. You could sell off one of your other tables to off set the cost and maybe keep one as a back up.

I should be receiving the Marantz 6300 by the end of next week (keeping my fingers crossed) as just found out that the seller has used unregistered email (typo in spelling the name) in Paypal so the fund was just sitting their with no claim. I just went in and withdrew the payment after receiving the notification from the seller. I will resend the payment on Monday so hopefully they can ship it out by Tuesday then will probably take a week or so to get to CA.

So I will keep 2 at the end of the day - or maybe 3 so I have automatic and manal TTs. Thanks.

I think that if you have a manual, either an automatic or semi-automatic would be a nice match. Especially, if you want to dose off. I know my Dad prefers full automatic now rather than the rest because of his usual excuse of being 1) Old but really it's No.2) lazy, haha.

Man .... McNewbie I hope you have a good storage space!

4 x SL-1200's
Marantz 6300
Technics SL-D303
Technics SL-1300
Denon DP-47F

.... and what's next? Still interested in that Yamaha PF-1000?

Did the Denon come with a cartridge (or did I miss this info)?

Space starts to be an issue now. My problem is that I have never sold anything I bought (cars are no different). Just hate the idea of having to deal with negotiations, unhappy buyers waning to return the item and get their money back excuses, etc.. I know I need and have to learn to deal with this sooner or later (sooner I hope).

Originally had the PF-1000 on my eBay watch list with the intention of winning the auction. Then someone mentioned that it is a belt driven unit so I removed it from my wanted list. For some reason, it is a habit now that I dust brush the vinyl before every play. I had no issue with this on my SL1200MKII units but this seems to slow down or even stops the platter from rotating when I brush the vinyl due to low motor torque (I think) so was concerned about this issue with a belt driven unit.

Depends what you consider a "dust brush". A carbon fibre brush should not stop your platter. While it may slow it down a bit, I have not run across a turntable yet - belt or DD that doesn't have enough torque to allow you to use one of these brushes.

I have a Pro-ject brush and hold it across the reccord for a few revolutions, then sweep across the record towards the center, grounding it out on the spindle. That's how the shop that sold it to me described it should be done. I'll clean the brush and do it a 2nd or 3rd time if necessary.

Now if you are using a discwasher-type (especially wet) that might be another thing ... I have one but I only use it "manually" with record in-hand or on a micro-fibre towel, not on the platter (and I rarely use it). That one I have always swept "up" by rolling the brush .... and it always leaves bits behind!

With regards to selling off some of your stock .... I shudder to ask how many cars you have!

My DP-45F needed RCA cables replaced. They were pinched badly where they exited the back at connector and were shorting out. This may or may not pertain to your model. Here's a pic in this thread.
