Separates vs Receivers

One consideration is how many inputs do you need. Some of these units are limited to two, maybe three. That was why I started using my NAD as a preamp. It has something like 7 source inputs. Where as my 3300 had two, if I remember.

Also some of the receivers would work better with the preamp out jack being used to your powered sub. I also use a sub/monitor setup with great results with my 2330.

Part of the reason you miss your 2250 so much was because it is a great receiver! Period!
You absolutely can't go wrong with this model. If you don't need all that additional headroom, I would say that a 2250 or (B) version will fit the bill just nicely.

Nice tuner, ample power but not over the top, very sweet sound with plentiful bass...

Your bigger difference will come from the speakers you use and not as much from going say a 2250 to a 2325. Power aside that is...

I've had approx eight 2325's and never really cared for them much. (compared to other marantz units) Powerful yes but IMO a nice 2250B sounds better!

Now if you are set on getting separates... Try a 140 amp and 3300 preamp with a 112 tuner. Very nice combo with lots of headroom at a rated 75 watts per channel. Had this combo too and wish I still had it. The 112 tuner is a real sleeper!

But really... I think a 2250B will impress! Especially with a really nice wood case on it! :thmbsp:

Oh yes...One other recommendation as far as receivers go... Don't count out a 2270. Very nice sound and can usually be had for a bit less than a 2275

When I had my 2250, I had a TT, CD player and VCR. I recall using the tape monitor 1 input for the VCR, the Aux input for the CD player and of course the one phono input for the TT. Wouldn't this work on any of the 22XX/23XX/Separates models?

I'd still need the 3 connections above plus (perhaps) a universal DVD/CD player. I'd use tape monitor 2 for this. Wouldn't this work?

I have a cassette deck that wouldn't be connected but that's ok, I could always swap out the connections with one of the tape monitor inputs if I needed to use it for some reason. If I didn't connect the universal player to tape monitor 2, I could connect the cassette deck to #2.

I had previously asked questions to this group re the phono and tape monitor inputs and what type of equipment I could/couldn't use. Unfortunaely, the phono input can't be used for tape, CD etc....only a TT, but the group said I could use a CD/DVD player in the tape monitor inputs.

My speakers are pretty sensitive (90 db) and the nominal impedance is 6-8 ohms. What was it about your 2325's that you didn't care about? What was different?

How about the 4300 model vs 2325 vs 4400 vs separates?:scratch2:

Yes you can use the tape monitor inputs for CD, Tuners, DVD etc.. I think tape decks can not be used on the Phono inputs, only TT's. The 2270, 2245, 2230 does have a great sound. But I've always felt that that line didn't have a very sensitive tuner section. Sounds GREAT if you can get the station in. But again, you need a strong signal. I found the later lines to have a little more FM sensitivity for general use.

Yes, I've read that and other sites for the last few weeks. Seems like '78-'80 were good years for tuner sensitivity. From a spec only perspective, the 2130was the better Marantz tuner. The 2600 receiver was also very good.
 
Not sure why the 2120 would be a "dog". Sure it does not sound that bad in my room with a Kenny 500 integrated...

Don't get me wrong, the 2325 is a heck of a receiver! Extremely powerful with a bass kick that is extremely satisfying. But if you are talking regular listening levels (meaning not overly loud...) A 2250B may offer a slightly smoother sound. The 2325 can have a tendancy to sound a bit grainier especially when pushed. Thought it might be the one model that I owned but 7 models later I still felt the same way about them.

4300 is nice... very similar to a 2325 from what I remember. Never heard a 4400 before so I can't coment.

Separates... depends on what you are talking about.
For the most part they offer a bit more refinement to the sound... but again it all depends on the models you are talking about. I particularly like the 140 and 3200 and 112tuner combo. Not too big, very powerful and very sweet sounding.

I'm currently using a 1200 integrated amp and couldn't be happier!
