Servicing a SONY DAT machine (Pictorial)

So if I got a deck with 35 hours on it and it started to jam. afterward it wouldn't load tape ( pull it out across the heads). When I took a look one of the tape load arms fell out, screw no where to be found. Worth trying to track down a screw and trying to fix?
 
Ok.

The PCM R300 features the same mecha as the one described at the beginning of this thread so you can follow the instructions to disassemble. You need to be quite handy.

Beside the screw you need to find the small white plastic part that goes under the roller guide.

As both arms are driven by the same gears it is understandable that everything is stuck.
 
Hey everyone, I'm looking for some advice on a Sony DTC-59ES with issues. It worked fine for years, but recently I started hearing noise during playback and then everything froze with a tape still in the deck. No playback, fast forward, rewind, or eject was possible. I carefully extracted the cassette loading mechanism using advice from the first page of this thread and was able to get the tape out. I reinstalled the mechanism and playback is once again possible, but with lots of extra harsh noise also present. Eject (open/close) now works every time if there is no tape inside, and about half the time if there is a tape inside. The other half of the time, the unit must be power cycled before ejection can happen successfully.

Does anyone have some suggestions for specific things to check when I disassemble it again? I don't have any experience taking apart DAT decks, unfortunately.

There could be several issues here.

I would start by:
- cleaning guide rollers, heads, capstan, pinchroller
- checking if both guides fully extend when a tape is loaded
 
Hello DAT gurus.. I need schematic diagram to add potentiometer for adjusting tension in DTC-670. I'll have some modification inside. But not adjustable.

You mean a forward torque adjustment modification ?

If so everything is described in the service manual supplement #1 that you can quite easily find (hifiengine...).
 
Yes, forward torque. Thanks, I have service manual, but I don't know for supplement.
Many trouble with dtc 670, all possible known problems with mechanics. But solved all.
 
Look at the very end of your service manual.

The supplement is already included in the DTC-670 sm available on hifiengine.

Now working, sometimes when try to eject tape unload and load again, and unload and open door. I'll check micro switches again. And I'll try to put some LED light like on ES models.

just my experience

I came across this thread a couple of weeks ago, after I wanted to reuse my nearly 20 year old DTC 670.Thanks to SaSi and all the other guys for their dcumentation, pictures etc. I've also found 2 usefull vids on youtube, one from a guy in GB and one from Germany.(I can post the links, if someone is interested)
So here ist what I did and helped on the 670 (I've also a 57ES, but thats another story...)
beside the cleaning of the gears and lubing, tension arms etc. it all came down to this:
check the brake pads on the 2 brakes giving the right tension

check and lube the movement of the 2 brakes

cleaning the spooling motor, this motor is out of power after 25 years - the reason for slow winding, for this I sprayed a cleaning spray for electronical devices in the holes of the motor, eventually repeat this process 2 or 3 more times if still slow winding...
cleaning the motor controlling tension arms and pinch roller, for this I sprayed a cleaning spray for electronical devices in the holes of the motor

At my 670 one brake pad was gone, so I made a new one out of this felt pad that is in a cassette cleaning the tape.

After all check the back tension and the pulleys in play mode!
This helped my 670er to come alive....

57es

So, my next "project" is the 57ES, I've picked it up a couple of weeks ago and it played all my old tapes smooth and nice.
BUT it suddenly started one day with distortion, so I winded and rewinded the tape and it the distortion was gone. But shortly after that, the right spool stopped moving, no matter which button was pressed.
So I disassembled everything and found a lose brake pad. I glued it and did the same process as I did with my 670.
But still distortion, no matter if I change the alignment with the pulleys.
So I raised the back tension with the screw (one half turn), the screw at the 57 is tricky to reach, you have to disassemble everything :no:
At the 670 you just open the case and alter the tension through the holes in the gears...:thmbsp:

So any suggetions what i can do next would be welcome, I'm at my wit's end......

OK, thank you I will look at the video, seems quite long...
both guides seem ok, like in my 670er, I will put the tension screw to the original Position....
Didn't touch the drum in the 57, so why should there be suddenly, but i will check that too...
