Distorted sound may occur if rf amp electrolyte is bad. Change all 6.

Hi,
don't think it's the amp e.g. the capacitors, my problem suddenly raised after I glued one felt brake pad, which has fallen off. So I did'nt change anything beside that. The Problem with the capacitors would occur gradually, not that sudden after my repair.
It has to be the alignment, but couldn't fix it so far....

Did you clean the head drum ?

When you wind and rewind a tape is it smooth, with constant velocity (except at the beginning of the tape) ?
 
Didn't make the cleaning of the head so far, I will do it the next days.
Winding is nearly ok for now, but sometimes it stops suddenly, so it was a little bit better before my repair...

In my dtc capacitors die instantly. Listening, pres stop and go to lunch. After 30minutes when pressed play distorted sound...
Under all 6 electrolytic capacitors corroded traces. Clean with alcohol, and wash completely pcb. Solder New capacitors and work excellent.
I'll think before that that problems come slowly, but ....

So, some news: the 57 with the distortion went back to the second hand hifi shop, it's still under warranty and they will try to fix it.
Beside that my 670, which I repaired a couple oft threads ago started again with his old problem: winding and playing tapes. The gears etc. all works fine, I disassembled the unit maybe a dozen time and can't find any problems, all is working smooth, so what comes to my mind is a too weak power supply for the winding motor. I read in an old threat that sony dats with that tape unit the power supply loses power over the years, that's why the winding gets worse and worse. Changing the capacitors in the power supply should help? Any suggestions for that?

Beside that you must be sure that the mecha is clean. Don't forget the base of the head drum, the axles of the reels...
 
Thank you again hdrobien! I never touched the transparent clips on the reels, didn't want to break them, but I will dissasemble the reels also asap, I'm very excited if that will solve my winding problem....

Could someone - especially gurus like SaSi please help to identify the problem with Sony DTC 2000ES - everything is functioning normally during playback, there is sound etc. FF and rewind, index search, pause etc. - all is smooth and no problems.
But during recording the transport clicks and briefly pauses each second or so. Recorded material can't be monitored (no sound and do VU level movement) - what is recorded are snippets of sound - 1 sec sound, 1 sec silence.
Am I correct assuming one of the recording heads is dirty or dead? Or is it the sign of imminent drum death?
Please advice because I can't open it at the moment - I've found it in this state in one of the pawn shops for some bargain price but if I open it there and repair it the price will be catapulted.
Also any advice on DTC-60ES - everything is functioning, VU meters during playback and recording show there is signal recorded and played but there is absolutely no sound either in LINE OUT and phones - only very faint, almost inaudible digital artefacts - some buzzing and crackling. SMD capacitors?
 
Hard to say from afar.

I am not sure concerning the 2000ES but on the 77ES the 4 heads work on a specific way, not like a 3 head cassette deck:
- one pair is for playback AND recording (master)
- one pair is for playback during monitoring (slave)
So if playback is ok the master heads are probably ok, maybe dirty.

It could be more of an electronic problem: recording modulated signal is not clear and transport can not synchronize.
 
Well I crossed the fingers and bought it in this state - and bingo, it was a jackpot - one of the recording heads was dirty.
Now 2000ES works and I got it for such a small price that I need to force myself into believing that I'm an owner of this legend.

I need a little help with my DAT ZE 700.
My Sony work properly 7 years and sunday i cleaned and glued the mecanism.(I have also 2 pices of dtc 670 dead)
Play,forward and rewind not working.

What's happening?
