Servicing a SONY DAT machine (Pictorial)

Hi all!

I want to order some pinch rollers for my decs.

Can someone confirm:
DTC-55ES / 75ES / 300ES / 1000ES / 700 is using 7mm diameter pinch roller?
And DTC-60ES is using 6mm diameter pinch roller??

Hi

From my experience, they all use the same pinchroller.

DTC-1000ES/300ES/55ES/75ES are more permissive than more recent models, as the position of the pinchroller is adjustable through the rotary encoder.

As far as I remember, I have tried 6 and 7mm, and they all fit in whatever model.

Hi hdrobien!

Yes i know i can adjust on DTC-1000ES/300ES/55ES/75ES through the rotary encoder, but i also have a DTC-60ES and i think it was smaller...

Also i don't remember to be adjustable on this model. I guess i have to open it and check to be sure...
 
The 60ES is not adjustable, but the pinchroller arm is spring-loaded, so a slight variation of its diameter will have little effect on the pressure against the capstan.
 
Regards to all. I want to ask a question right now. I have known about the frozen head problem on DAT devices for years. And that was not something that annoyed me until now, because it happened rarely. However, it has recently become an almost daily occurrence on one of my machines. No matter how hard I tried to understand what was causing it, I did not come across anything that would satisfy my appetite for knowledge. what can happen to the ball bearing on which the DAT head rotates, otherwise it gets stuck so much that it barely loosens after turning the head manually. And the moment it lets go, it spins without absolutely any resistance. What I am interested in is whether someone has investigated the problem more deeply, whether there is a rational explanation, and finally a solution. It really drives me crazy that I have to pry the stuck DAT head out of the door with a wooden stick so often.
 
Hi All,

I'm a bit new to DAT. Been a huge MiniDisc fan for years and now getting into DAT. I picked up a 300ES unit. Not bad condition but after a bit of inspection found it was missing some key parts. Specifically the right spindle spring, claw and retaining ring.

The part numbers are:

Compression spring - 2-623-754-01
Right claw - 2-623-752-01
Retaining ring - 3-345-112-01

Anyone know where I might be able to pick up these replacement parts?

I am afraid that the only possibilty is to find a donor deck. Possibly DTC-300ES, DTC-500ES, DTC-55ES, DTC-75ES, DTC-700.
 
Hi all, working on a DTC-59ES and have gone through mechanism and changed electrolytics on the RF board thanks to this thread, and the machine sounds very nice. I have an interesting issue -- playback of recorded audio sounds nice until the end, where I hear a loud noise -- meter maxes out for a split second. This happens with analog input, even with no source plugged in & input level knob at minimum. Has anyone run into this? Regards, falsefruit

I think it might be the tape that's causing this -- this was happening with some 3M R90 tapes and not my Fuji R-120P's -- all used. Could storage condition / formulation affect this? The sound I was hearing was very loud for a dropout, and always at the end of a recording -- not random.
 
Hi All,

So I've got another issue with my 300ES.

When I put the tape in and close the tray, I can hear something whirring but the tape doesn't engage the heads at all and the tape eventually ejects. Any suggestions on where I should be diagnosing for repair?

Hi. i have trouble with studdering play on PCM-R500. Seems to have trouble playing the tape smooth. I have cleaned the black rings as explained in this thread. It also have a sceaking sound when loading the tape. Is there a motor that needs some oiling? This is a great thread, lots of info here.
