Servicing a SONY DAT machine (Pictorial)

Hi

You can try to lube the gears, with a tinny tinny drop to avoid spilling oil everywhere.

Does it rewind/fast-forward smoothly ? If it stutters only when playing, I would suggest to clean/replace the pinchroller.
 
How do i remove the plastic gears for the tape loading mechanism on PCM-R500? Seems like they are not rotating freely, some old grease sticking...

So I'm now testing the record function. I have a tape in the player and the write protect tab has been moved so I can record to the tape. I have an optical input to the DAT (DTC-300ES) and playing a song from my PC to a USB -> optical converter. I then press "REC" and the player show info not he screen but doesn't start to record. Am I missing something here?

EDIT: So a little more reading and it looks like the message mean "PHOHIBITED" meaning I can't store music from iTunes onto DAT via a USB -> Optical converter. I'm assuming I could do it if I took the analog output from my computer to the DAT right?

Is there any way to record digital music onto a DAT?

EDIT 2: So it looks like I need something like a copy bit stripper to be able to copy from my PC to the DAT right?

So I found this device called a Elketor Copybit Stripper that was manufactured some 15-20 years ago specifically so people could copy from a digital source to DAT. I found the schematics, PCB layout and BOM but I can't find anyone who actually has the PCB files to have the boards manufactured. Anyone know much about them?

Ofcourse there are other options cheaper than eBay :) I have some copyprocessors to part ways with. Some of them are NOS.
You also have the DYI no.2 option ~20-30EUR a sample.
I successfully modded my 55-ES and 60-ES using the latest development ATTiny modules.
In every situation I get the ID6 00 on my tapes (No copy protection) :
ID6 00 Optical
ID6 00 Coaxial
ID6 00 Analog
ID6 00 AES/EBU

Ohhh, that looks interesting. Can you please send a link on how to make the DIY option and also links to where I can buy the ATTiny modules including installation instructions?

I guess getting the EPROM contents will be the main obstacle.
 
Ok. So my Hucht Copyprocessor Mark III arrived and it seems to work as I no longer have the copy prohibited message.

I play a MD from my MiniDisc player using optical output that goes into the Copyprocessor and then optical out from Copyprocessor goes to digital in on my DAT recorder DTC-300ES.

I then press "PLAY" and REC simultaneously on the DAT player and it shows recording but goes directly into PAUSE. I press the pause button but it won't "UN-PAUSE". I can see the left and right channel inputs moving not he DAT so I know the DAT is getting digital input from the MD player.

I can't seem to find the DTC-300ES user manual anywhere (only serve manual) so not sure what I'm doing wrong with respect to recording? Any advice?
