Set of Klipsch speakers in a dumpster

I heard back from the contractor and it is the blah blah blah that I expected. They cannot give me permission. There were some if ands or buts after that. I think you can all figure it out.

I'm not willing to risk hassle with my local PD. So, I'm going to move on, even though it will be a bit painful.

Nothing wrong with being cautious but technically i dont think taking something from a garbage can is illegal, once its thrown out its no longer their personal property, worst case is they could try & press trespassing charges for going on their property but 99% of home owners throwing stuff out wont care if you go on the property for 5 minutes. In my city/state, there are people that go through personal garbage cans every week, especially on the garbage amnesty days where people are allowed to throw out appliances, electronics & tvs etc, its not illegal. Only illegal dumpster diving are on businesses that specifically have signs posted or dumpsters that are fenced off etc.

Your past issue with taking 2x4s from a development is different since many carpenters or builders will put cut lumber in the onsite dumpster to store until they need a piece shorter than a new full length one, that could be considered stealing since they werent technically garbage. a dumpster for renovation where they are throwing away stuff considered garbage is different, i have dumpster dived for 10-15 years & when the business or home owner does come outside they never have a problem since its garbage & as long as you dont make a mess, if no one is there for days & days like you mentioned & you went on the property to take those pics, you could have easily removed them by now & had them home.

Thats great you have a concern for breaking the law, but if there are no no trespassing signs or other signage saying its illegal to remove items from the dumpster, there are no other laws you would be breaking besides trespassing & that requires a sign posted in most states before any charges can be filed against you or worst case you would get a warning. If its that close to you, walk your dog by there 2 or 3 times a day & see if the owners are there... or leave a note on the door with your phone number?? Just a suggestion.

The permit references construction resulting from a fire. Gotta wonder if the owner/insurance carrier decided they were totaled and are being replaced. Maybe the other one is toast.

I've moved on, folks. The speakers are in a roll-off dumpster in the middle of the drive way. The house has been cleaned out of personal belongings and furniture for a great many months. As is with many of these dumpsters, passers by dump their crap in them in the wee hours of the morning. This is called theft of service, a crime.

Given that the dumpster is on private property, I am not comfortable driving over in my car, pulling out a step ladder and struggling to get those beasts out. I am sure I could get away with it, but it's just not worth the risk for a pair of $100 speakers.

It's been snowing since yesterday and misting before that. So, chances are it's too late and they will be off to speaker heaven when the dumpster gets hauled off. I was kind of hoping someone with bigger nads than me would go over and retrieve them.

Sorry, folks!

If i was closer i would have got them in a hear beat so thanks for the heads up, maybe someone else saw them & got them.

& just FYI, these are far from "beasts", KG4 are like 35-40lbs & barely 2ft tall. they are also not $100 speakers, they sell for $350+ in average condition & have close to $400 worth of parts if the cabinets are bad.

They are beasts when you are 6' in the air on a step ladder.

Had I gotten them, they would have been put in service and not parted out.

Not really, im a smaller guy & have loaded bundles of shingles & lumber materials weighing a lot more than these up an extension ladder 10ft high without too much problem & i have a bad back. An average sized guy on a little step ladder could lift these smaller light weight speakers up & out of there with ease, just a general comment about them being "beasts"

& didnt suggest you would part them out, was replying to the $100 speakers thing... they are worth 2-4 times that amount regardless of what you do with them. & they looked to be in pretty good shape & the more desirable walnut finish.

I realize youve moved on & thats totally fine, but did you miss the legitimate & lawfull suggestions i made of leaving a note on the door or to walk your dog by there more often to see if you could catch the owners there? i understand the window of opportunity may have passed if they got rained or snowed on but still were just some reasonable suggestions to help you out & possibly have gotten the speakers, or for future endeavors.

Hope someone got them.

Anybody know if it is still considered stealing if taking speakers that are left out on the curb by garbage cans? In this case, they are on the street and no longer on private property.

I may or may not have saved a pair of Cerwin Vega DX-7s from a snowbank a couple of weeks back.

Can only go by what i see & have done in my city for 10-25 years, once its thrown out as garbage & set out on the street or curb its free for the taking as long as you dont damage their property or leave a mess digging through garbage cans. Same applies for dumpsters in the back of businesses unless signs are posted or they are fenced off etc.

Most cities have garbage amnesty days where people can throw out things normally not allowed & its almost a ritual that people will cruise around neighborhoods looking for things they can repair or use & its not illegal in any way, we have also had floods or bad storms that cause city wide damage & lots of stuff gets thrown out & people go through the thrown out items... ones mans garbage is another mans treasure!

Check with your local law enforcement or city officials to be sure though.

I've been stopped by cops dumpster diving in Denver area, pretty late at night. They informed me I was trespassing, helped me load my lumber and steel roofing, and escorted me off property. They didn't even make me feel embarrassed. They made me feel like they felt embarrassed about having to control what I was doing, which obviously was hurting nobody.

If a Karen comes at you, just invite her to call the cops. Can't live our lives making decisions based on fear of Karen.

If you were dumpster diving on my property, I'd make sure you got arrested, charged, and I would gladly be a witness at the trial. Your rationale for being a common thief is inexcusable.

With all due respects.

And my name isn't even Karen.

As someone who is regularly scathed by the absurdly high landfill costs in California, I'd be absolutely stoked to see some folks pulling crud out of my roll-away. I personally know all the crazy cooks in my neighborhood, and when something like that happens it's not like, threatening, it's just frickin Danny again. Boy, he just got outta rehab too.

Maybe it's because I live in a town of a thousand people and never have been in a city for long, I just never got out of the country state of mind.

Good luck with that! Hell in California, I couldn't get the police to come out for a stolen vehicle. Do you really think you could find a DA to prosecute?

So you'd press charges on someone taking some garbage you threw out? What would you charge them with exactly, stealing garbage? Good luck with that! Best you could try & do is trespassing but most states require a sign posted or a warning given before a charge would stick.

Maybe take some of that energy to your local government & police that allow people to blatantly steal from stores & walk out in broad daylight there in that lovely state of california.... any theft under a fairly large dollar amount is considered a simple misdemeanor in most cali cities. But youre going to try & arrest someone for stealing garbage?? LOL.

.

The last few years have shown that we all view things very differently. If somebody is that defensive about things they have thrown out... that's just how it is. If the dumpster was on my property I'd expect to have somebody ask before they go in. Mostly because they're doing something on my property especially where they can get hurt. I'd probably just record the interaction on my phone. In my case, I cleaned out my mother's cottage and because it was in a seaside community (read small yard) the dumpster had to be on a narrow street for 1 day. When a gentleman went in ... I just told him to be careful. He was a neighbor from down the street and I was glad he found some lamps, etc. ... I just viewed it as saving useful stuff from the landfill that I simply didn't have any more time to do myself. I had already taken about 10 truck fulls to the local Savers (like Goodwill). If anything he made more space for me although he really didn't take a lot.
Now, when it came to her car ... that was a different story. I was in the house painting and when I came out with some trash. Somebody was sitting in her car. Her former health aid showed up with her big baby Huey looking son and he was sitting in the car... she said "oh, I didn't know you were here...my son wants to buy the car" ... I was less than pleased. I said "ever think of knocking?" and told them they should leave.
My Aunt and Uncle are elderly and live about 40 miles away so I try to help when I can. Part of that is taking away some bigger trash items because I have a truck and landfill permit. Sometimes they just tell me to just put it out front and somebody is bound find a use for it and take it. Too easy :)

What are a pair of forte II's worth? Just found a pair at goodwill for $50 ... should i grab em? They're huge!! Anything I should check first?
