I've always been interested in transmission line designs.

How's the PVC pipe design present issues? Just the 9-degree bend in the neck? And any chuffing at all out the rear port, or does the stuffing help deminish/eradicate it?

Do you really get the bennies of a transmission line design with woofers that size? Or would one recommend it done on a larger scale, if possible, to maximize the effect?

My condolences on the demise of the Marantz. I hope it's resurrected soon. I'm glad the tubes are working for you. That's some consolation.

I'd love to be able to answer that but I've never tried the same drivers in the 2 different enclosures. I suppose I could scrounge up some materials and make a similar size wood line for those drivers. I'll see what I've got. Theoretically, the PVC should be more resistent to pressure changes inside because it's round and the sides wouldn't go tympanic, expecially with a 3" driver. However, a square wood line would likely have sides small enough to damp most of the resonance so I don't know if it would be audible.

My faucets are not tapered as I was too lazy at the time. Rob Sampson did some PVC transmission lines with various Fostex drivers and he used a 2x4 "wedge" to effectively taper the line. I may try that too at some point. He also used black PVC and his look much cooler.

Note: the Totally Tubular project shown above is a sealed enclosure using PVC, not a transmission line. Different creature completely, but waaaay cool looking, IMO.

Hey Deli,

A TL doesn't really "chuff" like a ported enclosure because the terminus is usually very large as compared to a typical port and because you're using the air volume of the port differently. I've heard plenty of TLs and none have chuffed that I've heard.

The benefits of a TL will show up with any size driver you use. However the weaknesses will too. Generally there's a midband ripple that can cause problems. Stuffing will help with that but once you stuff it to a certain point it becomes more of an aperiodic enclosure than a TL.

The only real drawback I've found to using PVC (other that WAF) is that it is very uniform so you can get a pronounced pipe organ type resonance if you don't stuff it. On my first go with the PVC I didn't stuff and all vocals sounded like the singers were holding their noses.

Too much resonance with pvc,.....How about sonotubes, heavy cardboard
tubes, used to pour cement columns, comes in multiple sizes up 12+", and
should be fairly inert,....Also could coat interior with 'gorilla' type pick-up
bed lining, spray on......Sounds like fun!.....Cheers!

Sonotube would work well, but I'm not sure how one would go about putting joints or bends into it.

From what I've seen of folded, rectangular lines, they break up things enough that the pipe organ type resonances don't appear as readily. They're still there and that's what the tuning and stuffing are for they just aren't as pronounced if you break up the line with little irregularities. My own primary speakers are multi-driver TLs with one bend. I love them.

Read the bit on that dragon looking speaker from t-linespeakers.org that's pictured earlier in this thread. He does his own "curving" of bigger PVC pipe for that one. You could do the same with Sonotube.

Sorry to hear about the amp. I'm running a pair of 4" RS 40-1197 in PVC periscopes in my bedroom. With a sub and proper placement they can sound pretty dang sweet.
 
I replaced the recently deceased 30wpc Marantz 27 receiver with the "baby" of the Marantz family.....a 10wpc Marantz 2010 receiver.
Since the Tang Band speakers are rated at 15 watts, I won't be blowing them any time soon......I hope!?
The Tang Band - PVC pipe speakers sound good mated to the little Marantz 2010.

I had some 4" raw speakers that I had bought in a sale from PE. I did not know what I wanted to do with them until I read this thread. I finally used them in a 4" PVC periscope transmission line connected to my JVC jr-s400 receiver. Good results with that particular receiver with its inbuilt equaliser.

More self-control on the volume knob.
These drivers are NOT designed as Woodstock-speakers.
I will pick up another driver from PE....now that I've been PROPERLY HUMBLED!!
