As the title says. I'll start

Horrible pics, great food.
My mum, sister, niece, and I went to my family's favourite restaurant tonight. A place where my sister worked as a server back in the day when they had a Michelin star - the food is still as good, just not as refined when it comes to prep and plating (ie. much less time spent to make essentially the same product). It was my niece's first visit there, and judging by her reaction, it won't be her last.

Cold asparagus soup, warm seared rabbit filet and kidney

John dory, green asparagus, fresh peas, stinging nettle sauce

Chef's surprise: Sea scallop, tiny little langoustine tails, carrots, buckthorn beurre blanc

Duck breast, courgettes, artichoke hearts, cherries, sauce(!)

The cheese was gone, before I could get a picture ;)

Pancake soufflé with poppyseeds, and strawberries Romanoff.

The wine menu

My sister and I always save a sip of each wine, so we can get another taste of each course after the fact. A silly ritual, which drives the foh/wife part of the couple who runs the place crazy, because she likes everything to be in order - and having five almost empty glasses on the table is far from that.

High end dining is never cheap.

And for good reason.
I could cook a menu like this at home for less money (and I sometimes do, because i like cooking and making people go "nom"). But that takes hours of planning, shopping, prepping, and cooking, plus finishing and plating while trying to enjoy the company. So I think the extra cost is worth it once in a while for five hours of quality time with family or friends, where no one has to leave their seat, and everything is awesome.

The day I spend $900 on a meal for 3 has not yet arrived.
Then you have something to look forward to ;). We were 4, though.
Also, luxuries like this are probably more expensive here in Denmark than in the US, due to higher taxes and wages. For example I made $18 an hour ($23 after 5 pm) cleaning offices and daycares, when I was a student.

I have had a couple of rough days at work, so I couldn't be bothered to cook anything tonight. I also didn't feel like take-out. So I went to the restaurant downstairs from mine for dinner.
I got the stuffed quail, which is probably the best dish I've had there. But the wine was all kinds of wrong - I asked the head waiter (who is one of my flat-mates) for whatever he thought would be good, and he brought me a glass of rosé, which was way to crisp and acidic for that dish. A nice, mellow pinot noir would have been perfect, but they don't sell those by the glass, so I settled on a glass of merlot.

I had to get some cheese as well. Tomme de Savoie, Morbier, and Compté, laid up in the wrong order.
It's a shame, really. The food is very good. But the attention to detail is so poor that if I didn't get half of my drinks-tap comped, I wouldn't be coming there.

What order should the cheese have been laid up? I have a reasonably refined palate, but am not at all into Haute Cuisine. How would somebody like myself recognize this?

One of my favorite take-outs is from Al-Sham2 on City Ave. across the street from St. Joe's U and a few steps west of Larry's Steaks Home of The Belly Filler. I should try to get a better pic next time but this is Al-Sham Style New York Combo plate which is marinated chicken and lamb grilled with long hots and onions over seasoned brown rice with white (garlic) and red (hot spicy) sauces, plus a couple falafels, with the side salad and cucumbers. I also get the mixed pickle side with it which includes pickled turnips, pickles, olives.
