Show us your Realistic (Radio Shack) stuff

I finally picked up some necessary equipment to do a proper tuner alignment and started with my STA-82. You are correct, the 'Auto-Magic' feature works very well when the tuner is properly aligned. I guess that shouldn't be a big surprise.
That one adjustment I made did the trick to get it to lock on properly.
Its been working great since. But I'm sure a proper alignment wouldn't hurt.
Tuners are one piece of equipment I don't mess with too much other than refreshing the power supplies. I don't have the proper equipment to do alignments, so it's all voodoo and witchcraft to me. :D

I sold this piece of Realistic BPC yesterday, made a quick $20.
It worked fine, as expected. It has a JVC vibe to me, with those sliders.

Radio shack had a way of putting cool features on some of there lower cost offerings which were always. A good value !

Early flagship unit first to hit 75wpc ! I have the younger sibling STA 2080 and Sta2290 the last big Tandy units RS sold ! Still have a STA2100 or STA2300 on my bucket list !
Not really to impressed by it. I have a 40 watt Kenwood KR 5600, that sounds much better. The 2100 has to much bass and no midrange. Probably end up selling it locally.

Yeah, there was something about the voicing of my former 2000 that seemed a little bit off to me. I forget, does the 2000 have a tone defeat button?
Unfortunately no. To get it to sound acceptable I have to dial the bass back and increase the treble.

The sta2080 had the best overall sound ,better than the sta2000 . It had bass , midrange and tone controls a 4 gang tuner and better loudness control and the controls are laid out better .but I’ve heard the sta2000 bass heavy tubby sound can be tamed with s good eq and it is a well built solid receiver with plenty of power and classic good looks !

STA-120 fresh off of the bench.

And here is my small collection of Realistic “glide-path” receivers and one amp. From bottom to top, in order from oldest to newest, are the STA-120, 120B, 150, 82, 85 and SA-2000. Not shown is an STA-800 currently on my bench. All have new electrolytic capacitors. Noisy transistors were also replaced where necessary. They’re hard for me to pass up when they’re relatively cheap, easy to fix, and sound so good when working properly. For what it’s worth, I picked up three of the ones shown for free.

I have a STA-2200 in the shop with my tech, however it has a fading display, I told the tech to convert the receiver to a integrated amp, by eliminating the tuner section and the phono section, in the I will have 4 aux in the sta-2200, what do you guys think ?

I saw somebody posted a pic of STA-90 in this thread and I was impressed by the look. Enough that I looked for one online. Has cleaned up nice so far and it will be a keeper for me. So far have not found a thread on a electronic resto project for these, will keep looking. I was not expecting solid aluminum knobs on this, pleasant surprise. And Quatrovox! STA-90.jpg

Quadravox can be interesting if you have a couple speakers you can add and put at the back of the room. They don't have to be great speakers either.
What it does is run the two resr speakers in series using only the positive speaker termina for each channel. This cancs.out everything that's the same in both channels and only plays the differences. Some albums it makes a big difference, others don't. It depends on the recording. Another way to do this is connect one speaker to the B speaker terminals using just the positive side of each Channel. It's basically the same as using Quadravox using two speakers
They used to call it Phantom Channel. I had one album where I could hear people.talking in the booth and toe tapping using Quadravox.

How did it sound? I've always found those little amps intriguing. 5 wpc was probably plenty for a bedroom.
It sounded small. 5w/ch (1.6w/ch RMS, by my measurements) wasn't enough for MY bedroom.

But, it was mine! Because I worked for it! And I truly enjoyed it... for about a year until I graduated to the SA-175B.

And, I still enjoy listening to it today.

I see no reason why not to do this, except for the possible hit to resale value. You can always add an external tuner if you want.
