Show your damaged turntable during shipping.

I think some vendors on ebay do not know a lot about turntables. I see a lot of them state that their testing involves only plugging the table in to see if it spins. Maybe a few of them just buy the turntables on estate sales on the hopes of making a quick buck off them and do not truly know how to package them. Perhaps ebay should automatically bring up a link on the proper packing of tables whwn the seller tags them to give them tips on proper packing?
I got lucky with my thorens. The shipper placed empty boxes around the sides of the table, wrapped it in bubble wrap and poured a lot of peanuts in the box. I would be afraid to sell turntables this way myself for fear of being out a turntable and having to absorb the cost.

This thread sucks. I won't buy a turntable off ebay. Even before this thread. I have however bought numerous things that were badly packed and broken in shipping.

I think this thread is great... whether people decide never to buy from eBay or they become fully and painfully aware of the pitfalls and properly prepare and address them, the educational value is great... and a single, specific thread makes things easier to find....

In fact, all threads are great... not all of us are born knowing... gotta learn from somewhere! [emoji2]

This thread is kinda the anti "post a picture of your turntable" thread.. might want to make it sticky!

I don't think anyone stands a chance of collecting from any of the carriers out there..... UPS, FedEx, USPS....WC

Not quite. USPS refunded me the cost of mine. I sent a copy of the auction, pictures of before I opened the box and afterwards. I did not ask for the shipping fee, just the cost of the unit. I received it 2 weeks later.

this beauty arrived yesterday.... i've been listening to records to take my mind off it... headshell broken off, gouges in the wood ..... -if these things were not built like tanks, it would have really been a mess.... -its now gone from putting a needle in it to a bit of a project! lol.... seller took care of me though so i really can't complain... still, she was about dead mint prior to the ship...... ec
-get in touch with me if you have a clean headshell for sale

Another AR packed poorly, every corner split, arm bent, armrest broken and motor spindle bent.

After a little TLC it's back on the road,

I went through my Ebay history and in the last two years I have bought 25 turntables on Ebay and sold 17.

Number of packing/shipping issues = Zero

I'm not sure how some of those I bought survived, but all of them had the platters removed. Platters that are not removed seems to be the cause of a lot of damaged turntables

I did ship a set of JBL Studio 530 speakers that Fedex dropped so hard the woofer magnets where torn off. There was no obvious damage to the shipping box or the speaker boxes. They were packed in the factory box and then placed in a larger box with foam between. I don't think they could have been packed any better. I sent pics of the broken woofers to Fedex and they paid the $440 in loss, including the shipping charges.

I guess I'm lucky!

That's a shame!

I hope you filed a claim, got a refund and left negative feedback.

Jon

I just started the process. This is 3 in a row for me. They say bad things come in 3's. Maybe the next one will be OK. There is really no excuse for this since instructions were provided. The platter took out the tonearm, cueing lifter, tonearm rest, headshell, and the cartridge. I'm surprised the dust cover was not broken.

As I indicated in a previous post, failure to remove the platter is a major cause of these problems. If not removed they usually will come off.

Recently Ebay has been requiring sellers in these cases to pay for the return shipping if the seller wants it back. Don't accept anything less.

Even if you get all your money back, I hate to see another vintage TT lost because of someone who didn't give a damn.

I don't care what the seller says, please leave negative feedback so that others are made aware of this sellers bad actions. They deserve it!

If you decide to try again I would be willing to look at the listing you're interested in and see if my "radar" picks up any red flags. I have a pretty good sense of that. I think it's part of my "luck"

I look at all turntables that come up for sale every day on Ebay anyway!

I have been fortunate too.
First TT was "professionally packed" according to the auction listing. :thmbsp:
No worries, right? :thumbsdn:

Seller offered full refund and a shipping label to return it or cover part of the cost of a replacement part.
Liking the turntable otherwise, I opted to keep the unit and [luckily] replace the dust cover with a used one.

Second turntable arrived in good condition per packing instructions I provided.
:para: I was still apprehensive, as this thread had popped up while I was waiting for it to arrive [just yesterday].

Professionally packed means taking it to the UPS store where some clueless clerk that has never seen a turntable before will throw it in a box and dump in some peanuts.

If the listing indicates professional packing it's time to move on. That's one of the biggest red flags!

Egad! What a hard thread to read through! Especially when you hear the stories of packing instructions being sent to the senders beforehand. Boo-urns!
